Tamron SP AF90MM F/2.8 Di Macro 1:1 Review

The Tamron AF 90mm f/2.8 Di SP 1:1 macro lens is designed for Canon Digital SLR cameras. It is equipped with the latest technologies. It is Di or Digitally Integrated and interchangeable and its coating has been improved to reduce much of the unwanted reflections. Popular among naturalists, the Tamron 90mm Macro is mainly for video and digital photo shooting. A portrait macro which comes with a soft cover, lens cover and the hood, is considered an exceptional option if close-ups and macros are a priority. This 90mm is a full -frame SLRs.

The autofocus of the Tamron 90mm just needs a simple pressure on the limit switch for focus control. It is the knob that feels loose but is not. The focus ring can be pulled or pushed when changing from auto to manual. This autofocus makes some noise when operating. There is a clicking noise every time you change from AF to MF or vice versa. This push and pull needs you to exert some effort, it looks quite easy to do, but, others prefer a quick release button.

Between macro and portrait, the Tamron 90mm works better for macrophotography. Although, it is a little sluggish as a macro, this lens produces nice images with admirable colors and contrasts. The Bokeh is acceptable, while the sharpness is from side to side. Chromatic aberrations are not easily recognizable and are within an acceptable limitation. For the wide open, this lens delivers well with intense sharpness and contrast if you stopped down to f/5.6.

As for its exterior, this lens has a plastic-built, so, it’s lighter against the heavier lenses of Nikon and Canon. However, using a tripod makes great images rather than using this lens without it. The black barrel with a slightly matte finish weighs 405g and has a typical length and size. This lens is quite portable, easy to carry around and small hands friendly. The construction built is not comparable with the more expensive SLRs. Other users applaud it for being lightweight, but, there are some who prefer a heavier lens especially the metal-built that gives a heavy-duty feel.

Earlier, this lens didn’t come with a soft pouch or any casing at all. However, nowadays, it comes with a pretty leatherette padded pouch and this is a pleasant improvement; a sad face for those who bought this lens before and didn’t receive the said pouch.

As for the price, Tamron is definitely not economical for a 3rd party. But others get hooked on this due to the rebates being offered by camera stores. Other lenses are definitely more expensive than this one, however, if it isn’t a career or an income-generating work, saving some dollars might be a great idea. This Tamron macro/portrait lens has a commendable image quality.

All in all, the Tamron AF 90mm f/2.8 Di is a decent macro lens that produces admirable images. It is a carry-around lens and the price is considered pricey by many users being a 3rd party lens. It is however, a good investment. It is recommendable.
