Tamron SP AF70-200mm F/2.8 Di LD (IF) Macro - Nikon Review
The Tamron SP AF70-200mm F/2.8 Di LD (IF) Macro - Nikon is a fast telephoto zoom lens for budget conscious photographers. The design of the lens includes 19 elements on 16 groups, with three Low Dispersion (LD) glass elements for reducing chromatic aberration. As per Tamron, this lens is 'packed with features that allow stress-free photography' and this is consequently achieved through the loaded features. Tamron SP AF70-200mm F/2.8 Di LD (IF) Macro - Nikon delivers sharp images from any focal length and contains a wide/fast aperture while being economically packaged. The area of improvement of the lens is in the autofocus system.
Tamron has historically produced high quality and affordable fast zoom lenses and the SP AF70-200mm F/2.8 Di LD (IF) Macro one is a perfect example of the brand’s focus on quality. This lens was launched towards the end of 2008 and belongs to the “Special Performance” ranges of Tamron lenses. This lens offers excellent optics, has a lightweight, a compact body and a careful pricing. The body of the lens is a tight package of metal and plastic. The lens offers true IF (Internal Focus) with a fixed physical length and a non-rotating front element. Operating the zoom ring is smooth and the rubberized focus ring can be decoupled from the focus gear system.
What are the functionalities ?
Tamron SP AF70-200mm F/2.8 Di LD (IF) Macro - Nikon has a conventional micro motor for focus. The lens is fast in AF mode and offers accuracy, but is not the best lens for action photography. The auto focus also causes some noise. Because of the short focus path, accurate manual focusing can be difficult. The SP AF70-200mm F/2.8 Di LD (IF) Macro lens shows moderate amount of barrel distortion at 70mm and moderate pincushion distortion in the middle to upper zoom ranges. Chromatic Aberration is properly controlled and you can see some in the 200mm range. Vignetting also ranges between 70mm and 200mm. The rounded 9-blade aperture produces good quality bokeh. Both contrast and colour are good. The build quality of the lens is not bad at all. Both the zoom and the focus rings are smooth to operate. The tripod ring, however, is not the smoothest in this range of lenses.
How is the image quality ?
The image quality of Tamron SP AF70-200mm F/2.8 Di LD (IF) Macro - Nikon is excellent across the 35mm frame on the wide end (70mm) and stays wide open at f/2.8. Stopping down only makes a small improvement in sharpness and it can be made by stopping down where the vignette is reduced. The center is sharp wide open even at 100mm. Stopping down to f/5.6 produces excellent image quality throughout the frame. At 135mm, the right side is softer compared to the left side.
Conclusion: should I buy it ?
Telephoto zoom lenses can be expensive and many of the models are not meant for the most budget conscious people. If you want the best performance in a budget-friendly telephoto zoom lens, Tamron SP AF70-200mm F/2.8 Di LD (IF) Macro - Nikon is an excellent buy for you.
