Synology DiskStation DS214 Review
The new Synology DiskStation DS214 is a dual-bay unit designed for home or small offices. The product comes in a cardboard box that includes the DS214, start guide, utility CD, power cable, Ethernet cable and fixing screws. With a medium size build and sturdy material, the DS 214 can fit in most places without the worry of dents and scratches.
The DS214 measures at 165 by 108 by 233.2mm so it is an average size storage device. The front panel of the device is designed to push fit over the bays in order to protect and conceal them. The outside of the DS214 is solid black in color and made of a plastic material, but the inside has a metal frame to add stability and durability to the device. Along the right side of the DiskStation DS214, there is a single power button, a USB 2.0 port and status LEDS. Users can install a drive by attaching the bracket designed for 3.5 inch drives or by attaching a 2.5-inch drive using the provided screws. The DS214 supports several storage software including Basic, JBOD, RAID 0, RAID 1 and/or Synology’s Hybrid RAID. Users can also copy content from a USB directly onto the NAS device by using the copy button (located next to the power button). The back of the device features a fan for cooling, power unit, Ethernet port, two USB 3.0 ports, reset switch and the lock slot. With a 1.066GHz dual-core CPU that features 512MB of DDR3 memory.
Installing the Synology DiskStation DS214 is an easy process to deal with. Users remove the front panel and snap the drive into place. One you have attached the drive, bring up the DiskStation Manager and the installation process begins. The DiskStation Manager will walk you through the process, step by step but for review purposes, we will give you a quick rundown of how the process works. Users first create a basic password and then go through the basic “language selection” and other processes to install their drive. Once all is completed, which shouldn’t take more than a few minutes, users are brought to the home screen. The home screen will look like this: a taskbar across the top of the screen, icons down the side(s), and status widget at the base. The DS214 uses the DSM4.2 interface technology.
There are several apps that come with this interface, a crucial one being the File Station. This app is a file browser, which lets users search through their NAS at a directory level. Diskstation provides customers/users with several NAS downloading options such as Torrents, HTTP, FTP, News and File Hosting. The Audio Station app is where all music content is stored while the Photo Station app is where all pictures are stored. The Synology DiskStation DS214 has one of the fastest encrypted data transfer rate of any NAS Server.
