Sony SEL-18200 Review
The Sony Alpha SEL 18200 is an 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 OSS lens that comes with silver color. It is designed for taking shots of landscapes, portraits, sports and wild life. It has, however, a little problem with the flash. The zoom lens gets in the way of the lower portion of the flash. Therefore if the flash is used, the light that comes from it is not equally distributed on the subject and there’s a shadow being cast on the image. Users are expecting that a flash extender will be provided by Sony for a better photo shooting that requires the use of flash. Also the lens doesn't come with a case, so, there’s a need to spend more for the protection of the lens.
The image quality of the Alpha SEL 18200 is admirable. The sharpness even of the panoramic views is commendable especially when there is enough light. The lens is equipped with image stabilization and there are no worries when taking shots without any tripod. Video recording is satisfactory, too. Noise is nowhere to be heard when focusing and during the whole period of video shooting.
On the other hand, the Alpha SEL 18200 has its own drawbacks. Compared to some Zuiko or Olympus lens, the Alpha SEL seems to fall behind. Acceptable sharpness needs a lot of settings manipulation before it is achieved. Moreover, there are others who found fault on movie recording due to focus failure and some issues on exposures and colors.
As for its exterior, the lens looks solid and durable while its metal build sits very well in the hand. You can actually feel the smooth movement of the zoom rings whether rotating or focusing without any unusual noise. The LCD screen display can flip up which makes it easy to take pictures at waist level.
Manual control of the lens is a bit of a challenge. The user needs to make some selections on the menus before any setting up can be made. The control ring depends mainly on the menus. This lens is also not that fast. Especially under low light, focusing needs some patience. Although this lens is a good inclusion in a photographer’s kit, no one should expect too much from it. In less lighted settings, the autofocus of the Alpha SEL finds focusing really hard. But with the manual focus, everything seems ok.
Photographers who are looking for a carry-around lens might get disappointed with this one due to its weight. Most users found this lens too weighty to be carried around especially when going on a trip. However, compared to DSLR lens, this Alpha SEL is lighter. The size of this lens posts a setback on some tripods. A part of its body touches the front part of the tripod.
All in all, the Sony Alpha SEL 18200 is a decent lens that looks durable. It is not the fastest and not the sharpest but it is a nice add-on to your kit. It is pricey just like other lenses and it would be better to try using this lens first to see if it fits your needs before you make the investment. It’s worth a try.
