Sony PlayStation 5 Review

The 3-Minute Sony PlayStation 5 Review

The PlayStation With No limits

By Rachel Hutson | December 2020

The Specifics

Sony has released the new PlayStation 5 and it’s better than ever and bigger than ever, towering over its predecessor. However, with big sizes must come big capabilities, with its amazingly fast SSD but mostly to its remarkable new controller, the DualSense. It has a detachable stand, unlike the Xbox Series X. On the front of the PlayStation 5 is an Ultra HD Blu-ray optical drive, a high-speed USB Type-A port, a super-speed USB Type-C port, as well as the power button and eject button.

A single tap of the PlayStation button in the center of the controller will now conveniently bring up the control center with a taskbar, checking things like current downloads or online friends is now much faster and more user friendly than that of the previous PlayStation 4. Another cool feature is a picture-in-picture mode so now you can watch a friend play in a corner of your screen whilst you play without missing anything if you’re a good multitasker.

Features & Design: 3/5 | Performance: 4/5 | Value: 4/5

The Best

Thanks to the SSD, the PlayStation 5’s load time is remarkably faster than even the Xbox Series X console by almost a whole second. The DualSense controller has been ergonomically redesigned to make the controller feel more comfortable, it also has a built-in microphone which cancels out the use of a headset, however, there is still a 3,5mm jack in case you’d still like to use one.

The Bugs

The size of the PlayStation 5 is massive, at a whopping 40cm in height and about 11cm in width, which makes the Xbox Series S look tiny if you stood them next to each other. In terms of power, there has been a role reversal. The release of Microsoft’s new Series X, with around 20% more grunt in power than the PlayStation 5, proves that dynamite really can come in small packages.

Is it for you?

If you enjoy gaming, the PlayStation 5 still has advanced capabilities to run even the most high-end games on the market to date and will continue to run them for as long as the game’s capabilities are within its reach. This powerful console will scratch all of the gaming itches that the average gamer will require.

What we like

Despite the power loss, the PlayStation 5 will also have a framerate of 120 Hz for some games. The PlayStation 5 is also impressively silent, running at an average of 44 decibels and a temperature of 58°C.

What we don’t like

The PlayStation 5 has an 825GB SSD, which translates to around 667GB of usable storage. That being said, it is significantly smaller than that of the Xbox Series X which has 802GB of usable storage. Compared to its previous successor, the PS4, you could use an external drive to store games on. However, there is space for another SSD to fit into the PS5 but there are not any SSDs approved by Sony.

Should you buy it?

If you have a gaming itch that needs to be scratched, the Playstation 5 will be the perfect tool for the job. In terms of power and durability, there has been some great improvement from its

previous PS4 successor, it would be money well spent and will perform well with other competitors.

Pros

Fast up load time due to the new SSD technology.

The new DualSense controller is remarkably ergonomic.

       120 Hz frame-rate capabilities.

Cons

The size of the PlayStation 5 makes shelving it inconvenient.

There are no Sony approved SSDs on the market.

Games with 120 Hz capabilities are limited
