Features & Design: 4/5 ● Performance: 4/5 ● Value: 4/5 ● Sound Quality 4/5
Sony has come up with a camera that it bills as being a base model with no frills and basic features. What we actually end up with is an all-rounder with tons of features and options to choose from. This is a camera that challenges the full frame camera crowd because of its excellent value for money proposition.
The view finder resolution could have been a little more detailed as the resolution is pretty low, as well as the sluggish menu navigation can make the device feel a little slow at times. An external battery charger also would have been nice.
Is it for you?
Whether you are new to the photography scene, or you are looking for a reasonably priced all-rounder shooter, this is a camera that is sure to surprise you with its features. It has a 24-megapixel sensor (BSI) and is great at capturing the moment in both low light and bright settings.

The camera also has a reliable and highly functional autofocus, which comes from the Sony a9’s sporty skillset, which makes action shots more easy to capture. This includes features like the 10 frames per second burst shooting mode, and very high quality video modes, up to 4K. Slow motion is also possible. The updated menu selections are a welcome change to the Sony Alpha 7 III, making a much easier task of navigating through the device.
What we like
The high quality sensor helps this camera to capture superb photos and videos, with the BSI sensor coming in at 24 megapixels. Battery life is also really good, with average running times comparable to previous Sony models of the same range. Expandability is another area where the shines.
Build quality on this unit is also top notch, and the weather proofing seems to be up to the task of taking outdoor pictures. There is UHS-II support, although only one of the readers is capable of these speeds, which is something to be aware of. Controls are good, although one or two buttons could have been slightly bigger, but your preferences might be different.
There are plenty of options for budding photographers that already have lenses, as the camera is compatible with all standard accessories. This means that you have future options for both videos and stills.
What we don’t like
One of the biggest dislikes with this unit is the touch screen. While it is definitely usable in many ways, and clear to look at, it is not particularly responsive on the controller side of things. It’s a small issue to note, but one that is worth thinking about.
Autofocus can be somewhat problematic in cases where you are shooting with smaller aperture sizes, which can result in focus failures or hunting. This doesn’t happen often though, and is a small issue when one looks at the rest of the package.
Should you buy it?
Taking up photography has never been easier thanks to the wide range of features and functions that Sony offers with their Alpha 7 III. The product range has really matured in recent years, and the end result is a camera that is easy to use and set up while retaining the creative elements that make photography such a great hobby and profession.
