Sony Alpha 7 II Review

Sony Alpha 7 II is a class on his own.

As a photography enthusiast, you must have realized the stir that Sony caused when they introduced their Alpha 7 series: the Alpha 7R and the Alpha 7. Sony set the bar by introducing the first ever mirrorless cameras with full frame sensors (just like the 35mm film frame). All other manufacturers are lagging behind. The two cameras are exceptionally small for full frame cameras but are not too far different in size from the Olympus OM-D E-M1 and in terms of control.

To make your photography experience even better, the guys at Sony headquarters had to do come up with something and that’s when they introduced the Sony Alpha 7 II. The A7 II is an upgrade of the A7 although some people may feel that the upgrades are very minimal as it still uses the same sensor as the A7.

The Sony Alpha 7 II was built with the professional photographer in mind just like the other cameras in the 7 series. You will be looking forward to work with manual exposure, shutter priority and aperture priority modes. However, Sony didn’t wish to push away the newcomers so they had to include the automatic and program modes. Moreover, they pushed in a couple of scene specific shooting modes. The camera also allows you to save images in both JPEG and raw formats. So what’s the big news?

First Sony had to include an in body stabilization feature which is Sony’s first on a full frame compact system camera. This feature allows the sensor to move in a bid to correct the exposure in case of an unwanted camera movement. This might not be a catch to A7 users but may be a deal maker for new buyers. This feature works better if you have a stabilized Sony lens as the systems work together for better performance. However, if you are using a third party lens, you can manually input focal length and it will still work perfectly.

Sony used a technology from the A77 II and A6000 that enhances the tracking AF performance which makes it easy to shoot moving objects. In addition to this, motion detection has also been improved and now the sensor can easily distinguish the subject from the background in case of any movement. The Sony Alpha 7 II also included some video features for the A7S which allow you to record in MP4, AVCHD or XAVC S formats. It also allows simultaneous dual format recording in either of the formats mentioned and MP4.

All in all, the Sony Alpha 7 II is an all-rounder as compared to the 7S and the 7R in the Alpha line. It’s a good choice for people looking for faster auto focusing and don’t really need huge files that the 7R produces. If video performance and low light aren’t major concerns, then this beast would really work for you. Although it doesn’t make it the best camera for sports shooting, it still works really well to capture sharp images from moving subjects. With an ISO between 50 and 6400, you can still control a lot image noise and detail.

There’s a lot more to write about the Sony Alpha 7 II but to keep it simple and clear, it’s a camera that you would buy in place of the A7 if only image stabilization is a major concern. Most of the other features are similar but there may be a difference in the handling experience.
