Sony Alpha 7 / 28-70mm Kit Review
Sony has been around for years and has made several contributions to the media world. Their most recent product, the Alpha 7 / 28-70mm Kit, has many photographers and bloggers talking. The Alpha 7 is a mirror-less camera that features a compact yet sleek design as well as several updated camera functions.
Weighing just 14.7 ounces and being 35.8 x 23.9mm in side, the Sony Alpha 7 is portable and comfortable enough to wear around the neck for a full day of shooting. The camera is made up of a solid, black magnesium alloy combination, keeping it fairly light yet durable enough to not cause worry. Unfortunately, the material is a bit slick so to be safe, it’s best to carry the camera round your neck with the strap. The textured, handling grip is actually very sturdy and durable, with the size of it being large enough to fit comfortable in your hand. Just above the handling grip are the mode dial, power button, shutter button and the exposure compensation dial. Compared to the older version, the dials on the Alpha 7 are a bit courser, making them easier to handle. Memory card and battery slots are located on the side.
Like most cameras today, the Alpha 7 also features a 3-inch LCD screen that can be tilted to create unique shots from many different angles. There is a 2.4 million dot OLED viewfinder for those who prefer one. Users can also record video on the Alpha 7, making the camera multi-functional. The record button is located on the right side of the camera instead of the back so users don’t accidentally hit the button. However, it was also placed on the texture grip, so it is still unclear if Sony made the right choice here.
The inside of the camera is what makes it all worthwhile. The Sony Alpha 7 uses a 24.3 megapixel CMOS sensor, making the camera perfect for both wide shots and close up, cropped shots. Sony has also added phase detection focus and contrast detection AF to the Alpha 7. Auto focus has been updated to feature a quicker time frame. Perhaps the most unique, yet not uncommon, feature to the Alpha 7 is the Wi-Fi application. Users can connect their camera to their Android or iOS device and control their camera from another location. As stated above, users can record video. Video quality is sharp, clean and the audio is impressive especially if users take advantage of the extra microphone jack.
With several different camera functions such as panorama, autofocus, customization and rapid shutter, we would think the battery would die quickly. That is not the case. The Son Alpha 7/ 28-70mm Kit can take up to 270 shots (including flash) before needing to be recharged. Although this is not ideal, it is also not discouraging. The Alpha 7 kit comes with a 28-70mm zoom lens, which provides an extra touch of creativity for the photographer’s shots. The zoom lens works well with all camera functions and provides crisp, clear photos even when zoomed all the way in.
