Sennheiser HD 229 Review

There are many high-street electronics retailers today offering “urban” headphones. Sennheiser, though usually conservative again presents the colorful HD 229 brand of urban-scented headphones which generate deep bass. They are to compete in the market with various other brands such as House of Marley, Skullcandy and Monster Beats.

Urban headphones in general produce a unique and bass-driven sound, but also seek to emphasize their distinguished appearance. They come in handy to wear while relaxing with friends or in any other environment. The Sennheiser HD 229 employs quite some basic reworking of HD 228 headphones, which have remained for years. Black/pink and White/orange on-ear cans replace the earlier simple black/sliver and white/silver color schemes. All other aspects of design, plastic construction and curves of cups in general remain the same.

While provocative, the color schemes used in the pair of headphones from Sennheiser are relatively brilliant and stylish to behold. Even then, the chromed pink as well as orange rings at the back of every cup would appear classier if they were finished in the headband stems’ matt orange. Monster Beats are a highly successful brand of urban headphones. Their design has been emulated by competing brands though without success. The HD 228 features a working metallic ring which is somewhat appears to be out of place and not in league with the costly headphones.

However, build quality is outstanding for a pair of considerably lightweight headphones. Both the ear-cups and headband are made using plastic, while other pairs utilize metal for constructing the headband. This offers better impression of flexibility and strength. The High-quality plastic works fairly well here, with headband offering good resistance levels. Other parts which are movable, such as hinge above each ear cup, allows for flat folding of the headphones, providing reassuringly-smooth action.

Sennheiser HD 229 weighs a paltry 92g, which is inclusive of cable, a fact which makes them comfortable wearing for extended time periods. They exert light pressure on the ears, which is sufficient for keeping them secured well while you walk or even run. Expect to experience superb comfort while wearing the headphones, which utilize soft leather pads of synthetic make. The ear pads are in particular quite soft and easily keep your ears from heating up excessively. This is what happens oftentimes with faux-leather materials. The cable may appear removable at a glance, though it is stuck firmly into plastic ear cups. It however runs down on just one side, which is a bonus, ending up in an excessively chunky straight jack of 3.5mm.

In general, key features of the HD 229 from Sennheiser include frequency response of 18 – 22,000Hz, On-ear design, 3.5mm straight jack and 16 Ohm impedance. This pair of headphones is designed to generate portable listening and delivers some good amount of portability to listeners. Expect to get peachy bass from the headphones without requiring any amplification.
