SanDisk Extreme Pro 480GB Review
SanDisk Extreme Pro 480GB features innovative nCache Pro technology from the manufacturer, which delivers high performance all-around the clock. It exhibits sequential read reaching speeds up to 550 MB/s and write speeds reaching 515MB/s, with its laptop lasting appreciably longer than regular models. Users can expect benefiting from Background Garbage Collection and TRIM support, which free up unallocated blocks once holding data to latency of lower levels and boosting performance. The SSD Dashboard of SanDisk incorporates S.M.A.R.T. support for monitoring real-time SSD health, thereby preventing loss of data. Extreme Pro from Sandisk is successor the revered Extreme II that featured among the most outstanding previous-generation SSDs, by reliability and performance.
All capacities of this SSD are 2.5-inch slim and measure 7.0mm x 69.85mm x 100.5mm. Consumption of power is fairly low in comparison to the more conventional hard drives, since Extreme Pro employs maximum of 3.6 watts for writing and 2.9 watts for reading purposes. The 480GB version features the same downgraded 515MB/s write throughput as 960GB model. It appears that 7 percent of original capacity is lost, owing to the conversion to 447GiB, shown by Windows as 447GB.
Sandisk Extreme Pro is in fact a revision of Extreme II and not really a totally new product. The manufacturer retains the proven formula still, affording Extreme Pro the exact same controller as the preceding version. SanDisk has chosen to refine its firmware while yet utilizing its own 2nd-generation 19nm 64GBit MLC, which is same as for the A19nm from Toshiba.
Marvell 88SS9187 controller features Marvell 88FR102, a dual-core V5 CPU, having shared DTCM as well as ITCM SRAM. DDR3-1600 memory buffer of 1GB is supported by the controller, though this is utilized on the two larger models, whereas the 240 gets a buffer of 512MB. For the 480GB model, that translates to four times its predecessor’s buffer.
As all other models of Extreme Pro, this version comes loaded with toggle flash memory of 1Ynm eX2 ABL MLC. The type of nCache technology witnessed in past models is now visible again in Extreme Pro, although it is now termed nCache Pro. Changes employed appear minor in some way and nCache has previously employed firmware along with NAND mapping table caching.
The nCache Pro is optimized more for user data caching, yet with SLC caching memory of below 1GB, it is probably being employed more as buffer than serious feature for enhancing performance. Extreme Pro 480GB has 1GB DRAM cache too, but SLC cache is employed for writes which are below 4K.
Extreme Pro is certified to provide written data worth 80TB, with two million hours in MTBF. It implies 22GB may be written onto the Sandisk 480GB SSD over a period of just 10 years. It is notable that unlike older-generation SSDs, like OCZ Vertex 4, the Pro version lacks any type of eDrive support or AES encryption. Even then the previous model, Extreme II, equally lacked support for hardware encryption.
