Samsung SSD 850 EVO M.2 250GB MZ-N5E250BW Review

Samsung is a market leader when it comes to solid state drives. The Korean brand have followed the SSD 850 EVO with the release of the M.2 and the mSATA drives. The M.2 is smaller than the predeceasing Samsung SSD 850 EVO, but their performance levels are somewhat at par with each other and they share similar components. The idea behind the new smaller SSD drives is that they will be ideal for use with the modern ultra-thin machines (PCs and the like) while maintaining the impressive performance levels of the bigger SSD drives. The mSATA drives offer a maximum of 500 GB, with other capacity options of 250GB and 120GB. The Samsung SSD 850 EVO M.2 250GB (version model number MZ-N5E250BW) offers 540MB/s reads and 520MB/s writes, a very impressive performance figure considering the size. This can be attributed to the SATA 6GB/s interface that it uses, which is compatible with the SATA 3GB/s and SATA 5GB/s interfaces. This solid state drive also boasts a maximum of 10.000 IOPS performance for the 4KB Rdm Read (QD1), 40.000 IOPS on the 4KB Rdm Write(QD1), 97.000 IOPS on the 4KB Rdm Read (QD32) and 89.000 IOPS for the 4KB Rdm Write (QD32). Such performance levels are pretty sweet, and made possible by the Samsung’s Turbo Write Technology. The performance levels are however reliant on the 3GB “turbo-Write” SLC region and suffer greatly in its absence. As stated earlier, many of the features and parts are shared with the earlier 850 EVO SSD drive. An example is the Samsung TLC NAND; a high-density 3D 32 layer V-NAND. The Samsung SSD 850 EVO M.2 250GB has two of these NAND drives and each has a capacity bordering the 128GB limit. A 512MB LPDDR3 DRAM cache is used, and so is a Samsung MGX controller. This solid state drive is built for power consumption, or so it seems. The power consumption when idle is as low as 0.95W while it only consumes 2.6 W at maximum usage. The incorporated DevSleep feature is particularly impressive and combines beautifully with the triple-core ARM design. The said design is vital for the power consumption feature as it includes Turbo Write, TRIM and garbage collection. This drive also supports AES 256-bit encryption as well as the TCG/Opal V2.0 encrypted drive. The Samsung SSD 850 EVO M.2 250GB has a small size, but the performance numbers are good. It is a good piece of investment and worth consideration. This device is expected to be a big hit in the tech world.
  • Pros:
High capacity at a compressed size low power consumption capability boasts great performance levels has same performance levels as the bigger predecessor and hence suitable for use with smaller slicker machines amazing 3D V-NAND which enables this device to keep all the features of the original drive
  • Cons:
Pricier than the 850 EVO drive performance inconsistency in degraded states
Our score:
4 / 5
