Samsung CLP-325W Review
The Samsung CLP-315W is a full color laser printer with built-in wireless connectivity. Designed for small businesses with monthly printing volumes of up to 20,000 pages, the CLP-325W has one highly useful feature that most other printers don't: a "WPS" button that sets up a Wi-Fi connection rapidly and easily. When it was released, Samsung called the CLP-325W the "world's smallest color laser printer".
The design is very straightforward. The majority of the chassis is a dark piano black with touches of glossy plastic trim around the perimeter. The printer sits in at 15.3 inches wide by 12.3 inches deep by 9.6 inches tall and only weighs 24.3 pounds; it's surprisingly compact compared with other color lasers.
The top of the Samsung printer is just as simple as the chassis, with a single power button and several LED lights to indicate a wireless connection, paper jams and toner shortages. The control panel lacks a dedicated cancel button, so to stop a job in mid-queue; you have to do it manually through the operating system. The top of the unit also has a foldout arm to catch paper on its way out of the feeder. A removable paper tray on the bottom and can hold the standard 150 sheets of paper in a variety of sizes up to 8.5 inches by 14 inches. Unfortunately, there's no manual feed slot, but you can use the main input tray for different kinds of irregular media including envelopes, card stock, and transparency papers.
Inside the machine are four ink cartridges (black, cyan, magenta and yellow), an imaging unit (the part that places the toner at the right location and then fixes it on the paper) and a waste ink tray.
Setting up the CLP-325W is a breeze. Simply click the button on your router and the Wi-Fi setup button on the printer.
The procedure is still pretty simple to set up if you don’t have WPS functionality in your router as well; however it requires a USB cable that is not included in the packaging.
Once you have the printer connected through USB, simply run the setup on the included CD and input some details on your network such as your WEP or WPA key.
Relative to other similarly priced color laser printers, the CLP-315W is significantly slower in both black and white and especially color prints. It scored 13.15 pages per minute for plain black. The CLP-315W also takes the longest to spit out any kind of color document, scoring a measly 3.64 pages per minute for color graphics and 4.07 pages per minute for color text. The rest of the units in the comparison lineup finished printing in less than half the time in both categories.
Unfortunately, the print quality hardly makes up for the slow print speeds. As expected from any laser printer, black and white text appears well formed with sharp detail down to the smallest readable font size, but colored characters come out improperly layered, resulting in a thick, smeared composition.
The Samsung CLP-315W’s primary selling points are its compact size and ease-of-use. It's a good buy for anyone who's looking for an inexpensive printer that gives reasonably adequate printing quality. Just don't expect many bells and whistles or record print speeds.
