Razer Blade Advanced I7-8750H 512GB RTX 2060 Review

The 3-Minute Razer Blade Advanced Review

For Gaming Only! The Blade 15’s Issues with Productivity Work

The Specifics

The 2019 Blade 12 Advanced is the exact same design as last year’s model. Sporting an aluminum chassis that has sharper edges, it has a more squared-off appearance than previous Razer models.

It weighs in at 0.7 inches (17.8mm) thick and 4.56 pounds (2.07kg), being slim and light enough to move around daily.

The Mercury White version (silver really) is considered less grand than the traditional matte Razer units. The glowing three-threaded snake logo on the laptop’s lid is absent, and the finish picks less fingerprints than the black model.

Impeccable gaming chops are the hallmark of a gaming laptop. The basic Blade 15 specs include a six-core Core i7 8th Gen Intel processor, 16GB of RAM, 512GB SSD, and an RTX 2060 graphics card.

The 15-inch 1080p matte display has a 144Hz refresh rate and covers the full gamut of the sRGB spectrum. This means the Blade 15 can slice and dice most games at more than 60 fps with all graphical settings at max. It will even reach 100fps in titles requiring less.

The 2060 is the best balance between performance and value in the lineup, and most gamers should be impressed with what the Razer Blade 15 delivers. An RTX 2080 Max-Q card and a 9th Gen Core i7 processor can provide even more power if need be.

The Best

The best features of the Razer Blade 15 Advanced are the display and smooth gaming experience. GPU-intensive processes thrive on this beast. It is ultra-thin too, making it a candidate for carrying around.

The Bugs

The Razer Blade 15 Advanced speakers can have a glitch where they sound terrible. Sound improves if Dolby Atmos is turned off. The charger may also interfere with speaker delivery. This only happens during gaming sessions.

Security issues exist with the Intel microprocessors installed in the laptop. Razer’s website hosts downloadable fixes to these vulnerabilities.

Is it for you?

If you’re a hardcore gamer looking to shell out good money for the smoothest gaming experience, the Blade 15 Advanced is your winner. Look elsewhere if you want to use this at the office (except it’s a gaming business!).

What we like

The Nvidia Turing graphics upgrade is definitely more powerful than previous Pascal variants. The battery life is improved but not nearly where it should be for productivity use.

The display (even at 1080p) is still grand. All courtesy of its 144Hz refresh rate, smoothing out animations and motion by outpacing the framerates the GPU is capable of.

What we don’t like

The Blade 15 Advanced delivers excellent gaming performance, but this prowess starts to bite the dust when the laptop is evaluated for productivity and creative work. From the shallow travel of the keyboard to the poor palm rejection of the trackpad (causing the cursor to exhibit erratic behavior).

The forceful feedback for this island-style keyboard makes typing a painful chore, especially when typing questions

The poor battery life emboldens any other reasons to not enjoy the Blade 15 Advanced – only3 hours between charges – barely half the “up to 6 hours” Razer advertises.

Should you buy it?

The Razer Blade 15 Advanced’s performance is not even as good for productivity or creative work as comparable products. The Microsoft Surface Book 2 is great for productivity and is really decent at gaming. It may be better to look the other way and go for something offering better bang for the buck.

  • The Good :
Solid build quality, Superior high-refresh rate display, Great power for gaming
  • The Bad :
Shallow keyboard with annoying layout quirks, Poor palm rejection on the trackpad, Consistently noisy fan
Our score:
4 / 5
