Oppo is a well-known brand that also manufactures TVs and other consumer electronics devices as well as smart phones like the R9 and R9 Plus. Today we are looking at the 5.5” inch R9 to see how well it performs, and if it could be the smartphone for you.
There aren’t too many things that count against this device, and the overall impression that we get is that it is a flagship device at a mid-ranged pricing level. Some people might not enjoy the interface that comes standard with this phone, and gaming performance is a little underwhelming on graphically intensive games.
Is it for you?
If you enjoy the aesthetics of the iPhone 6 but aren’t an iOS fan, then this could quite possibly be the smart phone that you have been waiting for. Let’s take a closer look.
Meet the Oppo R9
Looking at this device it is easy to see why the Oppo R9 has been such a hit with consumers: it features a 1080 x 1920 FHD resolution, and a pixel density of around 401, giving users a clear and crisp display with highly detailed visuals. Processing is handled by an octa core MediaTek MT6755 CPU clocked at 2GHz, and the phone ships with an impressive 4GB of RAM. This comes together to deliver a phone that has nippy performance and excellent load times for apps.
What we like
The simplistic styling and the inclusion of an aluminium frame gives the phone a premium and high quality feel that is matched by its excellent system performance. Charge times are quick thanks to Oppo’s fast charge capability, giving users 75% battery life in a 30 minute charge cycle.
Daily usage is also really good thanks to the 2850 mAh non-removable battery, which keeps the phone going all day without any issues, depending on average user use and what applications are running.
The front facing camera has an impressive 16 Megapixels, meaning that highquality video chat and selfie taking will be elevated to the next level. There is also a highly responsive front facing fingerprint sensor on the home button, which works really well.
What we don’t like
The user interface might not be the best implementation that we have ever seen, but this is easy remedied by customizing the menus to something that feels a bit more familiar.
Gaming is also an area where serious fans might not see the best performance if comparing it to the latest flagships from other manufacturers, but at this price point it is more than acceptable.
Should you buy it?
If you are after a sleek phone with familiar styling and impressive performance, then this is an excellent choice. The front 16 megapixel camera is amazing for selfies and video chat, while the 13 megapixel rear facing camera takes good pictures in well-lit environments. Overall this is an excellent phone for the price, but for those looking for a slightly bigger device the R9 Plus would be a better option.
