OnePlus 5T Review

The 3-Minute OnePlus 5T Review

The flagship killer takes it up a notch

By Zach Riley | December 1, 2017

OnePlus 5T Screen and Back

The Specifics:

Features & Design: 4/5 ● Performance: 4.5/5 ● Value: 5/5

The Best:

There’s very little not to like about the OnePlus 5T. It has an HD OLED screen that is the perfect complement to its excellent software and performance. The large battery gives you a full day of power while its relatively low price makes it one of the best phones you can buy.

The Bugs:

There are a few unfortunate drawbacks to this otherwise excellent phone. The lack of waterproofing means that you should be extra careful with the OnePlus 5T. The camera, while otherwise impressive, doesn’t do well in low light situations and the lack of expandable storage is another minus for those who take a lot of pictures or have a big music library.

Is it for you?

If you’re looking for a high-end smartphone but don’t necessarily have the budget to pick up the latest iPhone or Galaxy, the OnePlus 5T is the phone you’ve been looking for. It is an excellent all-around phone. With the lack of waterproofing, so-so camera, and omission of wireless charging and any expandable storage options, you’ll have to make some sacrifices. Still, it’s hard to beat what the OnePlus 5T gives you for the price. That said, if you already bought a OnePlus 5, it's not really worth spending the money to upgrade.

“The OnePlus 5T is easily the best phone in its price range.”

Meet the OnePlus 5T

Since releasing their first phone back in 2014, OnePlus has begun to make a real name for themselves in the Android smartphone market. The Chinese company is a bit of a newcomer to the smartphone scene but they’ve already made some excellent phones that have held their own against flagship models from more established brands like LG and Samsung.

The OnePlus 5T is their latest release. Much like Apple and their “S” series iPhones, the OnePlus 5T is the updated version of the popular OnePlus 5. However, the 5 was only released five months ago. That begs the question, can a phone introduced five months after its predecessor bring enough improvements to be worth upgrading to? In short, the answer is: “It depends.” OnePlus has once again managed to create an excellent phone for a great price. Whether it’s worth buying really depends on the type of phone you’re looking for and if you've already bought a OnePlus 5.

Woman Talking on OnePlus 5T

What we like

One of the OnePlus 5T’s biggest changes is its display. With a big HD OLED screen (that was developed by Samsung), it gives you a lot of space to watch Netflix or play Super Mario Run. The screen produces bright colours and is easily visible in all sorts of different lighting.

The battery, while the same as the one from the OnePlus 5, gives you all-day battery life despite the 5T's bigger, more demanding screen. While it isn't the best battery on the market, it comes close. When you do run out of power, OnePlus’ Dash Charge technology lets you charge the 5T very quickly.

The software is another strength. OnePlus' custom OxygenOS operating system is bloatware-free. When combined with the phone’s powerful hardware, you get snappy and responsive performance that makes using the 5T fantastic. The introduction of face recognition technology is a nice addition (although it’s not secure enough to validate payments) while the inclusion of a headphone jack is another small feature that makes the 5T’s pitch to be your next phone even stronger.

One of the most interesting aspects of the OnePlus 5T is its price. This phone is surprisingly affordable. With high-end performance at a mid-range price, it has a great balance of performance and value.

What we don’t like

There’s very little to dislike about the OnePlus 5T. However, the camera isn’t the best. That said, outside of low-light environments, it takes pretty nice photos. Another issue is the lack of a microSD slot. Considering that a lot of Android phones offer a microSD slot to give you extra storage options, the absence of expandable storage on the 5T is disappointing.

The OnePlus 5's lack of IP-rating is another notable drawback. To keep things simple, an IP rating gives you a sense of how resistant a phone is to dust and water. The 5T has no rating. That means if you drop this phone in the pool, even for a few seconds, you shouldn’t count on it surviving.

The final disappointment is the absence of wireless charging. It’s not a must-have but almost all the phones that the 5T is trying to compete with have it. While the OnePlus 5T isn’t as expensive as the flagship phones from companies like Samsung or Apple, it’s still an investment. The lack of waterproofing, average camera, and lack of extra features give you reasons to be skeptical.

OnePlus 5T Side Profile

Should you buy it?

The OnePlus 5T is an excellent phone that is perfect for those looking for fantastic performance at an affordable price. With its big screen, bigger performance, and all-day battery life, the OnePlus 5T is easily the best phone in its price range. As long as you’re careful to keep the 5T protected and aren’t turned off by the average-quality camera and lack of features, you’re probably going to be very happy with this phone.

If you've already picked up the OnePlus 5, it's probably not worth upgrading to the 5T. The hardware is more or less the same. The only big difference is the screen. At this point, it's better to wait for the 2018 phone releases.
