Olympus PEN E-P5 Review
Back in 2009 when Olympus introduced its original Micro Four Thirds, the PEN E-P1, it was the first compact mirror less interchangeable lens camera available in the market. Following the footsteps of its predecessors the fourth model of the E-P range the PEN E-P5 continues to carry the lineage.
The PEN E-P5 is the best of all the PEN models till date owing to its power filled features. The only thing that concerns a buyer is its heavy price tag, which is certainly high in comparison to the other cameras of the same range. However, an Olympus fans would definitely find it worthy of its price because the kind of picture quality this camera offers is impeccable. Regarding its specifications and updates, the Olympus PEN E-P5 has variety of high-end components such as 16MP MOS sensor, advanced '5-axis' in-body image stabilization with automatic panning detection, 9 fps continuous shooting and rear touchscreen that can be tilted. Apart from these basic features this camera has a top shutter speed 1/8000 sec, peaking display for manual focusing and a built in Wi-Fi connection. The Olympus PEN E-P5 features a 2x2 dial interface i.e. that a small lever provided at the back of the camera shifts the dials from regulating various exposure controls. And the best part is that if you don't like the arrangement it can be altered as per your wish.
The whole concept of Olympus PEN E-P5 is about emphasizing in the speed. Its superfast 1/8000 sec shutter speed allows making the best use of the Olympus's prime lenses. This feature is aided by a Low ISO setting that is equivalent to ISO-100 so that you can shoot with wide-open aperture in the sunlight. This cool new Olympus camera comes with some additional features such as Super-shot AF mode for precise focusing when using the live view, the Live Bulb mode, which helps in monitoring long exposure and an amazing stabilization system. Apart from these, the tilting 3:2 LCD capacitive live view touch screen at the back of the camera provides the ease of viewing, clicking and recording. The screen is 3" in size, which is pretty big for clear viewing and making adjustments. As mentioned earlier, that this camera is all about speed, its important mention that the shooting speed of the camera is 9 fps and it has an in-built flash that has an effective range of 7m. Apart for these for the ease of clicking picture and producing great images the camera comes with 23 built in scene modes to shoot from.
Overall, the Olympus PEN E-P5 is one of the best mirror-less cameras available in the market and it keeps up to the expectations and quality of the most popular E-M5. It's like having a camera that is every bit as good, but in a compact and a portable form. This camera produces excellent quality images and its image stabilization system works amazingly. The end result is clearly a better camera than any of its predecessors. But the part that raises concern is that it has got a lot of competition in the market in the forms of Sony NEX-6 and Fujifilm X-E1, and yet many more products are yet to hit the stores soon. So it'll be great fun to watch out how the PEN E-P5 scores in comparison to its other competitors.
