Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 25mm F1.8 Review
The Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 25mm F1.8 was introduced to the standard prime lenses’ market last year and it was expected to compete with a couple of premium lenses already on the market such as the Panasonic/Leica Summilux 25mm f/1.4 ASPH and the Nokton 25mm/f0.95. Nevertheless, this lenses are extremely expensive and so Olympus had to figure out a way to compete against them in all aspects including price. Just like the M.Zuiko 45mm f/1.8 which is inexpensive yet very fast, the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 25mm F1.8 enters the market with the same features to try and make a name for itself.
Although the depth of filed capabilities is still wanting, the f/1.8 is really fast at maximum aperture in regard to light gathering. When working on an MFT camera you would expect to lose a few f-stops. In this regard, we would classify the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 25mm F1.8 together with the 50mm f/3.6” when it comes to creative potential. Nevertheless, this is still a good performance when working close to the subject looking for a shallow depth of field image.
The Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 25mm F1.8 looks similar to the 45mm f/1.8. This only assures us one thing: the build quality is one the higher side. From a far, you would think the body is built on high quality metal when in reality it’s made of plastic parts. With the M.Zuiko, you won’t worry about the packaging as it’s a tiny lens. When it comes to AF operations, be ready to get fast and silent results.
The Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 25mm F1.8 would be described as a high quality lens that comes with great features for the average photographer. When it comes to resolution characteristic, you would expect it to be even across the various aperture ranges and this lens does the job. The quality of the center is excellent and the outer image region is also superb. Lateral CAs are as usual kept on the low, so as image distortion. However, you should expect some light fall off in the edges when working on extreme aperture settings. In general the bokeh is smooth but some experts feel it would be even better if the out of focus area would be highlighted.
The build is really good at its price range and you should expect a very fast and silent AF thanks to its MSC technology. When using autofocus in still photography or movie shooting, the results are awesome. All in all, there is very little to complain about from the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 25mm F1.8 mechanical and optical qualities. The only thing that maybe Olympus should have considered is the addition of a faster max aperture. However, considering the price range, it’s really nothing to complain!
