NVIDIA SHIELD Tablet K1 Review

Key features

  • Nvidia Tegra K1 Graphics
  • 5MP Camera (front and back)
  • 2GB RAM
  • 2.2Ghz Quad-core CPU

The Nvidia Shield Tablet K1 release date was on July 29th, 2014. A successor to the original Nvidia Shield Tablet, which upon release proved to be an affordable, gaming orientated tablet packed with enormous value. The original release of the Shield Tablet suffered issues with battery overheating, and Nvidia eventually had to withdraw the line from sale. The Shield has returned however, with no battery problems and a minor facelift, but minimal internal hardware and software changes.

What are the features ?

Software in the K1 includes access to the Nvidia Shield Hub, which has a broad array of titles, many which are exclusive to the K1, and all of which—are optimized for the GPU bundled inside the K1 tablet. The Game store has a few other applications and features available as well. The K1 is Android based, and as such it comes bundled with the usual Google based services—Gmail, Chrome, Play Store, Drive and more. The Nvidia Shield Tablet K1 Battery life differs very little from the original Shield tablet—you can expect it to last a full day with general use, and approximately 5 hours with graphics-intensive gaming.

What is the sound and video quality ?

The Video quality of the Nvidia Shield Tablet K1 is perhaps one of the best aspects of this affordable gaming orientated tablet. The visuals are bright, sharp and generally Lag free. The Kepler SMX GPU is what made the original Nvidia Shield Tablet a great gaming powerhouse—making the Shield Tablet K1’s gaming performance on par or exceeding that of high end tablets like the Ipad Air 2. As for sound Quality; the Nvidia Shield Tablet K1 is not generally orientated towards a high end audio experience, while not equipped with anything like Dolby technology or other audio features, the no-frills speakers provide a modest and balanced listening experience.

Conclusion: Should I buy it ?

If you are looking for a very affordable, gaming-orientated tablet—the Nvidia Shield Tablet K1 is an excellent choice. The Nvidia Shield Tablet K1’s Kepler GPU is one of the best portable graphics processors around, and this definitely shows with the K1’s excellent gaming performance. The Nvidia Shield Tablet K1 is possibly the best choice for a gaming tablet in around the $200-$300 price range
