Nokia 8 Review

The 3-Minute Nokia 8 Review

A good phone that fails to stand out

The Specifics:

Features & Design: 4/5 ● Performance: 4/5 ● Value: 3.5/5

The Best:

The Nokia 8 doesn’t skimp on features. With a beautiful design, great camera, fantastic screen, good battery life, and speedy performance, it marks Nokia’s strong return to the high-end smartphone market.

The Bugs:

While the Nokia 8 is dressed to impress, there are a few notable drawbacks. Despite its excellent performance, it’s still priced a little high for what it gives you. While it’s a great all-around phone, it doesn’t necessarily stand out from the crowd in any area and it also lacks waterproofing.

Is it for you?

The Nokia 8 is a solid smartphone with a lot to offer. With that said, it’s not necessarily excellent in any particular area. If you’re a Nokia fan or just looking for a phone with a beautiful display and good all-around performance and a nice screen, you’ll probably be happy with the Nokia 8.

“It’s a great phone that looks beautiful and has an awesome screen but it fails to stand out from the crowd.”

Meet the Nokia 8

2017 marked the return of Nokia to the smartphone scene. After HMD Global purchased the company earlier in the year, they announced that at least a few new Nokia branded phones would be released before 2018. We’ve already seen the Nokia, 3, 5, and 6 - all of which are mid-range phones that have been generally well received. The Nokia 8 is the company’s attempt to gain a foothold in the high-end smartphone market and, good news, it seems like they’ve done a pretty good job at it.

What we like

There’s a lot to like about the Nokia 8. It has few drawbacks but it does a good a job at meeting our expectations in most areas. Perhaps the most notable feature is its beautiful QHD display. The screen is exceptionally bright. That means that it's easy to use in all conditions, including direct sunlight. Performance is also a non-issue here. With a smooth and responsive operating system, the Nokia 8 can handle almost anything you throw at it.

The phone’s design is another strong point. It’s perhaps one of the most beautiful models we’ve seen from Nokia this year. It sports a shiny finish that really makes it stand out. It’s also available in four colours: steel blue, tempered blue, shiny blue, and shiny copper.

The camera comes with two sensors: one for black-and-white and another for colours. This dual-sensor combo is a feature we’re starting to see on more and more high-end phones since they let you take some beautiful pictures (even when it’s dark). While the Nokia 8 has a pretty average sized battery, it will generally survive a whole day of moderate to intensive use which is a plus.

What we don’t like

While there are no glaring drawbacks to the Nokia 8, it doesn’t necessarily excel in any area either. For the price, there are some other pretty impressive phones from more established brands like Samsung and LG. In the high-end smartphone scene, you either need to be the best of the best or offer something unique. The Nokia 8 does neither.

While the design is beautiful, the steel blue and tempered blue finishes look a little dull when you see how shiny the other two colours are. Many high-end phones are also waterproof. The lack of this useful feature is definitely a strike against the Nokia 8.

These issues are relatively minor. Still, the phone is just all around “good” rather than “excellent” or “impressive.” It’s hard to consider it a top choice in the luxury smartphone market considering its lack of exclusive features.

Should you buy it?

The Nokia 8 is a solid all-around phone that will accomplish pretty much anything you need it to do. With that said, it’s a little overpriced for what it offers. It’s a great phone that looks beautiful and has an awesome screen but it fails to stand out from the crowd.

If you’re a Nokia fan or are looking for a nice-looking phone with a great screen, you’ll likely be pleased with the Nokia 8. However, we feel that it’s not the best option in this price range.
