Nikon Z7 Review
The 3-Minute Nikon Z7 Review
Nikon’s Premium Mirrorless Camera
By Graeme Messina | September 27, 2018
Features & Design: 4/5 ● Performance: 4/5 ● Value: 3/5 ● Battery Life 4/5
Nikon has gone into the wild lands of mirrorless cameras before, but with mixed results. So, how does the Z7 stack up? It’s good news this time around, as Nikon appears to have ironed out some of the quirks that we saw in earlier attempts at these silent cameras. It’s great to handle, has excellent frame rates for the resolutions that it attains, and has VR functionality as well.
There are some obvious negatives straight out of the gate with the Nikon Z7, and the most glaring is the single XQD slot that the camera is equipped with. It is certainly not a deal breaker, but having multiple storage options has become somewhat of a given on other premium devices, so it doesn’t go unnoticed. There is also a lack of lenses available for this range of cameras, with there being only 3 at the time of writing.
Is it for you?
It is hard not to recommend a camera with impressive specifications like the ones that are found on the Nikon Z7. The main sensor is a behemoth, capable of full frame 45.7 megapixel MOS, measuring at 35.9mm x 23.9mm. The Expeed 6 makes quick work of the image processing, and it has great ISO figures to boot.
Meet the Nikon Z6
It isn’t every day that one gets to take pictures at 8,256 x 5,504px with a mirrorless camera, and the results are impressive. Video isn’t left out of the equation either, and the device is capable of capturing video in 4K UHD at 30fps. The unit is equipped with connectivity options too, such as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.
What we like
The over all construction and build quality is really good, giving the device a sturdy feel that is likely to last for a very long time. When one considers the overall features and capabilities of the camera, it is hard to believe that it only weighs around 625g.
There is a decent image stabilization feature built into the camera, so even unsteady hands can get professional looking shots. There are VR based lenses that are compatible with this camera, giving people the ability to create fully immersive visuals if they want to.
The control layout is well market and easily accessible for photographers, although for the uninitiated, there might be a bit of a learning curve as the options are quite comprehensive.
What we don’t like
As has been noted in other Nikon devices that share this new form factor, not all lenses are able to fit to the device. To do this, a special adapter must be purchased separately, or as part of your initial purchase. One you have this adapter, you can then mount all of your Nikon lenses to use with the Z7.
Other than those small issues, there isn’t a whole lot that we didn’t like, apart from the pricey asking figure. Bear in mind that this is not a happy snapper for casual photographers, so the price premium shouldn’t come as a surprise if you consider what the camera is capable of.
Should you buy it?
If you are a serious photographer that is in search of a lightweight, silently operated high spec camera, then yes, you certainly should consider the Nikon Z7 as a feasible option for your photographic aspirations.
