- Can capture Full HD 1080p video at up to 60 frames per second
- Full manual control
- 60x optical zoom
If you thought bigger always means better in the world of digital cameras, then you might have to think again because the Nikon Coolpix P610 is a small and compact digital camera that comes packed with most, if not all, features that the average user would ever need from a camera. It even has enough functionality to wow professional photographers. Despite its small size, this camera comes with a 60x optical zoom range, which means that it qualifies to be an ‘ultrazoom’ camera. In addition to this, it comes with its predecessor’s 16MP CMOS image sensor that is back illuminated to ensure that you get clear images with minimum noise. To help in the capturing, you get a screen that can be able to flip out to give you an ample time capturing even when the angles are not very friendly. If you are more traditional, it comes with an electronic viewfinder with a resolution of 921k dots.
What is the design?
The Nikon Coolpix P610 measures 125mm by 85mm by 106.5mm when ready to shoot. It weighs about 565grams, which means that you are certainly going to need a camera bag to carry it around. However, that’s not necessarily a bad thing because the bulkiness of the design improves on ergonomics. You get a nice rubberized grip that sits well on your hand, along with a generous thumb rest that gives you an easy time when shooting using one hand. Despite the fact that the screen is not touch sensitive, it would be false to say that the controls are not easy to use. The settings are split into five groups: Video, Image, GPS, Wi-Fi and Other Settings. There is a mode dial at the top next to an on/off button and an “Fn” button. Next to these is the shutter release button and a zoom rocker.
What is its performance ?
When it comes to performance, this camera does not disappoint. It gives you a lot of control options to ensure that you get the shot exactly as you want it. If you are a newbie or someone who is not interested in the complicated photography stuff, you can still get the high quality images by switching to the Auto mode that adjusts everything for you except the image size and quality.
What is the image quality ?
When it comes to image quality, you can get a wide range of options from this camera. Nonetheless, the common denominator is that the camera produces stunning images. Colors are vibrant and still not oversaturated. The images have no distortion in the wide range of focal lengths supported by this camera. However, when shooting far away objects, small details can be a bit smudged, an issue that is common with cameras with a small sensor.
Conclusion: Should I buy it?
The high image quality combined with the built-in GPS, Wi-Fi and NFC make this device a perfect compromise if you are looking for a camera that produces good outputs but you don’t have the budget to spend on a DSLR. The camera can take SD, SDHC and SDXC cards.
