Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm F/1.4 Review

The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G lens has a fixed focal length and is claimed to be a perfect portrait lens. Other than that, if you will take a wide shot, just take a few steps backwards to get a wider view. This lens has an impressive contrast and tack-sharp focus. It is compact, well-built and reliable. It is small that makes the camera light and comfortable to use. Since it is a one-lens set-up, it is never a challenge for any member of the family to use it. It is never complicated and there are not too many options to choose from. It looks simple but the output is like that of a pro. This lens is a G lens so it doesn’t have an aperture ring. The command dial on the camera is the one to use in order to control the aperture. Isolating the subject is effortless and there is no big issue on the focus speed. This is a speedy 50mm lens with no obvious vignetting. It has a narrow DOF and skin tones are very natural. It is definitely good for close-up and portrait shots. Details like skin, hair, lashes and more have a step-up clarity. Bokeh at 1.4 is stunning. This 50mm can be considered as a standard lens for day time and night time photo shooting. It isn’t a zoom, so, there’s really a need to move here and there, up and down in cases where you need to get the subject’s different angles. This lens is less intimidating to others who are camera shy. Moreover, this prime lens develops the skills of those photographers who got used to using zoom lenses. There is an element of hard work here but it’s definitely worth it. One drawback is the autofocus speed that is less impressive when taking photos of sports activities or any other action-packed events. The speed of the silent wave motor is below expectations. But once it is focused, the results are amazingly sharp. Even inside the gymnasium where lighting is not enough, this lens produces fantastic photos. For other users, the speed of the autofocus is acceptable, not an issue at all. The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G lens is an all-around lens that can do landscape, portrait, special effects and moonlight photography well. It has a consistently admirable output. This is a perfect addition to your collection of lenses. It is easy to use and effortless to focus. It beats many zoom lenses which cost an arm and a leg. It is reasonably priced compared to other lenses of the same range. It is a prime lens but with a wide aperture. This saves some big amount of cash. It has become a favorite prime lens of most photographers. You can even eliminate the use of a flash for indoor photo shooting and the result is always great. All in all, the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G lens looks simple but performs excellently. It is cheaper than other lenses but the results are comparable with the expensive ones. It is reliable and multi-purpose, a carry-around. It is a must-have lens.
