Nikon AF-S Nikkor 20mm F/1.8G ED Review
Nikon AF-S Nikkor 20mm f/1.8G ED comes as an affordable and compact prime lens with of ultra-wide-angle nature. The lens features Nano Crystal coating that reduces reflections and quiet-focusing SWM or Silent Wave Motor. There are 13 elements within 11 groups that include two glass elements of Extra-low Dispersion (ED), together with two spherical lens elements, designated as AS. Closest distance of focus is 0.2m.
The lightweight and compact Nikon AF-S Nikkor 20mm f/1.8G ED full-frame lens of wide angle form weighs 355g. You may use it on DX body for 30mm equivalent viewing angle, although this action will not offer good balance. This is because the lens better suits a camera like full-frame D750, which is of professional grade.
Quality of build is quite good as Nikkor 20mm f/1.8G ED imparts solid feel when held in the hand, even if filter thread and outer barrel seem to be plastic. The focusing ring is wide as required and features rubberized and ridged grip band. This G series lens has no aperture ring, which is not a big deal unless you are keen to use it on an extremely old film body.
Nikon AF-S Nikkor 20mm f/1.8G ED is comprised of distance scale which comes complete with DOF scale even though the latter has limited usage, only bearing f/16 markings. The lens has no Vibration Reduction, with focus mode switch being the only lens-barrel control with the regular M and M/A settings.
Take note that the 20mm f/1.8G ED lacks sealing against moisture and dust. It comes with a dedicated HB-72 hood of petal shape, together with CL-1015 Flexible Lens Pouch.
Nikon 24mm f1.4 features SWM or Silent Wave Motor which facilitates near-silent functions of auto-focusing on all the DSLRs of Nikon. This solution gives the user power to execute instant manual override even if focus mode switch lies in M/A position. The focusing is done internally in full, implying the lens length always remains constant.
Chromatic aberrations are typically viewed as fringes of blue or purple found along contrast-like edges. AF-S Nikkor 20mm f/1.8G ED from Nikon controls them impressively well. When the lens is wide open, light is noticeably falling off within the corners. Stopping down does help, even though one requires using f-stop of size f/5.6 or smaller to overcome this phenomenon.
Overcoming flare is a common problem with an ultra-wide lens. The Nano Crystal Coat present on the 20mm AF-S Nikkor prevents veiling flares quite well but cannot eliminate unwanted reflections in full when shooting into sunshine. Although not a macro lens, it boasts having a 20cm close-focus point from sensor/film plane.
The word Bokeh is used when referring to describe areas which are out of focus within a photograph. It is normally expressed in qualitative terms, including harsh, creamy and smooth among others. Nikon AF-S Nikkor 20mm f/1.8G ED lens has iris diaphragm possessing 7 rounded blades, which leads to an attractive rendering of out-of-focus highlights.
