Nikon AF-S Micro NIKKOR 60mm F/2.8G ED Review
Nikon AF-S Micro NIKKOR 60mm f/2.8G ED is a 50-60 mm lens, designed as macro and normal for film or FX cameras, but also as macro and short telephoto for DX digital cameras. It compares well with the other lens models in this category, especially Sigma 50 mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro and Sony 50 mm f/2.8 Macro. The AF-S Micro NIKKOR 60mm f/2.8G ED lens is a G-class one with no aperture ring. Using the lens for manual focus is extremely easy, moving the focus ring is a breeze. The AF-S Micro NIKKOR 60mm f/2.8G ED is considered the first aspherical macro lens for professional use.
Nikon was doing rather well with its previous lens versions and came up with the AF-S Micro NIKKOR 60mm f/2.8G ED much later in 2008. With a focal length of 60mm, a close focus of 185mm and a 39.7° angle of view, it offers excellent photography. Nikon AF-S Micro NIKKOR 60mm f/2.8G ED has both manual and auto focus. Nikon uses its Silent Wave Motor for quiet auto focus in this lens, and has also improved flare resistance with a Nano Crystal coating and a ED glass element. The macro elements in the lens are improved because there is no increase in length of the lens when zooming.
What are the functionalities ?
For optics, the AF-S Micro NIKKOR 60mm f/2.8G ED lens consists of 12 elements in 9 groups. Apart from one ED element and two aspherical elements, the lens also has a highly advanced Internal Focus (IF) design, allowing the inside elements to move and to adjust, notably when zooming while keeping the outer length of the lens constant. The 9 rounded blades of the lens stop down to f/32 and the blur circles stay round. This ensures that the bokeh quality ranges from normal to good. The lens may become slower at a closer distance and can stop down up to f/57 at 1:1. This lens, which comes with a deep circular hood, is good for use with graduated filters, macro ring flashes and polarizers because there is no rotation of the front filter thread. Despite being a macro lens, the AF-S Micro NIKKOR 60mm f/2.8G ED has fast focus speeds. The chromatic aberrations are properly controlled in this lens at all the apertures and throughout the image area. Some photographers have mentioned that the illumination towards the corners falls off. The falloff seems pronounced on a full frame at f/2.8. Between f/5.6 and f/8, the visually uniform illumination is achieved.
How is the image quality ?
Nikon AF-S Micro NIKKOR 60mm f/2.8G ED offers sharp and contrasting images at all aperture values. If someone is aware of the issues like illumination falloff at wide apertures and no focus limiter switch, you can work around these issues.
Conclusion: should I buy it ?
Even if you are discerning photographer, you should be happy with Nikon AF-S Micro NIKKOR 60mm f/2.8G ED. You cannot go wrong with this lens if you are looking for a macro lens with short focal length.
