Microsoft Surface 2 32GB Review
The new 32GB, Microsoft Surface 2 is a vast improvement over the previous Microsoft Surface RT. The new Surface 2 showcases several new and improved features including easier Windows RT experience, upgraded tools such as Outlook or PowerPoint and a drastic increase in battery life. Regular Microsoft customers are sure to be impressed and pleased with the new Surface 2 with 32GB of space.
Let’s start with the basics, the design. Microsoft has upgraded the design of their laptop-tablet to showcase a sleeker, lighter and just overall more visually appealing look. The Microsoft Surface 2 is now .35 inches thick and weighs just 1.42 pounds. The color of the device has also changed; it is now a silvery-gray color. However, there are also several features that remain the same. The tablet/laptop is still made up of the VaporMag material and has slightly rounded edges. There is also a built in kickstand located on the back of the tablet-laptop for user convenience. Although this was on previous Microsoft tablet-laptop versions, the designers at Microsoft have now made the kickstand adjustable. Microsoft has also gone ahead and upgraded the display features of their tablet. The Surface 2 now features a full, 1920-1080 HD resolution screen. The color has also dramatically improved, leaving images, videos or documents more vivid and saturated verses drained out.
There have been several adjustments and upgrades in terms of software and the functionality of apps. The Microsoft Surface 2 still uses Windows RT 8.1 as its main software and the company has added the ability to adjust the tile size on the home screen and move them to different locations. No other big changes have been made to the software other than there being no easy way to get from the start screen to the desktop. Although the desktop is just wasted space with the way Windows RT 8.1 runs. Microsoft has also updated the tablets hardware, adding the NVidia Tegra 4 processor, 2GB of RAM and a 1.7GHz ARM. These updates have made for a faster, smoother and a more user-friendly experience when using the Surface 2. As far as apps go, the biggest improvement is that there are now over 100,000 apps to choose from versus the original 3,000. The problem is many of the apps are out of date, meaning they make it to Windows devices last, so by the time the “new” apps reach Windows products, they’re often considered “old”.
Although the battery size has not changed (31.5Wh), the life of the battery definitely has. The Microsoft Surface 2 can be in use for nearly 15 hours straight (in max use and max brightness) before dying. Add in Skype calls or constant Netflix movie watching and obviously that will decrease but, overall, the battery life is impressive. The Surface 2 is a good middle ground for those who won’t use their tablet all day everyday but do plan to get a fair amount of use from it.
