Microsoft Office 365 Home Premium Review

The Microsoft Office 365 Home Premium is a business oriented software product. In addition to Word and Excel, it has added new features linked to Office servers. These include: Exchange, SharePoint and Lync. Services that run on SharePoint are also included. These are project services, Excel services and Office web apps.

Microsoft along with third parties offer hosted versions of the above services. This makes the new MS Office 365 a very versatile software for business purposes, but somewhat complicated due to the all-new features. The Outlook web app and Office web applications fall under the category of hosted online services in relation to MS Office servers. The product also offers subscription licenses to access the Office desktop software. Since its launch, the Microsoft Office 365 Home Premium has introduced the 2013 version of Exchange Online, Lync Online as well as SharePoint online. It even brought different business subscription plans for consumers to take advantage of. For instance, the Office 365 Small Business Premium has features that include PowerPoint, Word, OneNote, Excel, Publisher, Outlook, Access, and Lync.

Attached to the overall package is a subscription license for each user to run the Office 365 Small Business Premium on for up to 5 different PCs or Macs at a given point of time. This increases its use and benefits, especially for businesses. There is the added benefit of receiving timely updates and new features as well. The Office on Demand option allows the user to download MS Office to any PC temporarily in use. The services provided are the same as the already existing ones for Office 365. These familiar services include: hosting and collaborating with a public website (through SharePoint Online for document sharing), access to Exchange Online with a 25GB mailbox for each user, Lync Online for audio and HD video conferencing, SkyDrive Plus storage (through SharePoint Online).

Larger companies can benefit from the Microsoft Office 365 Home Premium's full set of Office related features. It is very useful and practical, especially for Exchange Online services like legal hold, public folders, rights management, data loss prevention and protection of confidential information; archiving included. This MS Office product is essentially targeted for use as a collaboration and cloud-based software. However, there have been plenty of issues associated with the Microsoft Office 365 Home Premium. There have been problems with Outlook (especially with account migration processes) and the Cloud service isn't as amazing as expected, especially considering the long waiting period for this software to come into the open market.

There have also been known issues with costs and charging, with paid services not functioning at the anticipated and declared optimum. There are plenty of twists and roundabout functions that take away from the simplicity of what the Microsoft Office 365 Home Premium is supposed to be about. One of the worst instances with this software is how customer service requires a 'read' receipt before transferring an email account.

  • The Good :
Single license permits use on 5 machines, including Macs; Large number of quality services in a single package
  • The Bad :
Not easy to interact with on a touch screen
Our score:
4.5 / 5
