Microsoft Arc Touch Mouse Review

Microsoft is always looking to make statements in the market and has just done that with the unique Arc Touch Mouse. It does not exactly add any feature when it comes to functionality, but its convertible design and light travel-friendly design makes it stand out. It is wireless, using a Nano-sized Bluetooth receiver which plugs into the PC, laptop or tablet. It uses two triple-A batteries whose slot is located on the front bottom part of the mouse. Being a device from Microsoft, it goes without saying that the Surface Pro is a perfect device to use with the mouse. Straight off the box, you will have a slim flat device which has a bump on the batteries section. To turn it on involves bending it until you hear a snap sound, upon which a green LED lights up right behind the scroll pad. Turning it off is as simple as flattening it out. It features the customary left click and right click buttons which sandwich a silver scroll pad/plate (instead of a scroll wheel). The buttons are quite sensitive, requiring minimal force to click and working quite nicely. The touchpad has a tactile response vibration as well as a slight clicking response which can be turned up or down to the benefit of the user. The response is quite helpful as it gives a good sense or feel of how you are scrolling. The said touch pad supports accelerated scrolling which implies it is possible just to flick your finger up or down the pad to quickly navigate through long documents. As previously stated, this mouse does not vary a lot from the regular mouse from an interface point of view. One feature worth mentioning is the use of Microsoft’s BlueTrack technology. A BlueTrack laser sensor located on the bottom part of the device allows to manage a responsive cursor that works on a variety of surfaces. The said sensor gives off a blue light when the mouse is turned on. Considering that this mouse uses a lot of Microsoft technology, its performance on Microsoft PCs and devices (such as the Surface Pro) is quite commendable. The collapsible design is one of the unique features of the mouse. It consists of a well-articulated frame covered in a stylish thin black rubber. According to Microsoft, travelers will appreciate the design as it is not only feather-light but also very slick. The missing thumb-side buttons on the mouse are a disappointing omission which would have increased its functionality. The thumb-side buttons have become particularly useful for forward and backward movements when web browsing. Microsoft has tried to make up for the lacking features by making it possible to program the scroll tab to act as a button. Some users have also reported Arc Touch devices that experience a slight loss of sensitivity on one-half of the touchpad, although those are few isolated incidences that Microsoft has hopefully fixed by now.
  • The Good :
Unique design, A touch sensitive scroll pad that has tactile response, has accelerated scrolling feature, uses Microsoft’s BlueTrack technology making it ideal for a variety of surfaces
  • The Bad :
    Expensive, lacks thumb-side buttons
Our score:
4 / 5
