LG V30 Review

The 3-Minute LG V30 Review

Its strength is also its weakness

The Specifics:

Features & Design: 4.5/5 ● Performance: 4/5 ● Value: 4/5

The Best:

The LG V30 is a beautifully designed phone that gives you some of the best audio that you can find on a smartphone. With good battery life, solid performance, wireless charging, and a great camera, it has a lot going for it.

The Bugs:

While the LG V30 has a lot to offer, there’s room for improvement. Even though it has a huge OLED screen, the picture quality (shockingly) isn’t that good. It also uses clunky software, has a below-average front-facing camera, and is pretty pricey.

Is it for you?

If you listen to a lot of music on your phone, the LG V30 is a no-brainer. It has some of the best audio you can get on a smartphone. If sound quality isn’t a huge thing for you, it’s still a beautiful Android phone with a big screen, smooth performance, a fantastic camera, and solid battery life that’s worth considering. Just keep in mind that the screen's quality isn’t the best and there are some software quirks.

“If you’re really into music or photography, you really should take a look at this phone.”

Meet the LG V30

The LG “V” series has always been aimed at customers who want a top-of-the-line camera and cutting-edge audio. The V10 and V20 received praise for their cameras and audio quality. LG is looking to continue that tradition with the V30. For the most part, they reached their goal. With updated hardware that helps the phone stand out in the increasingly competitive smartphone market, the LG V30 seems to do a good job in following in the footsteps of the V20.

What we like

There are a lot of good things to say about the LG V30. It was designed to be a media powerhouse that gives you incredible sound and takes beautiful photos. When it comes to the camera, the V30 hangs with the very best of them. With a huge number of manual features, some of which you could only previously get on a DSLR camera, the V30 gives you a lot of control to take gorgeous shots. It's perfect if you’re an aspiring photographer.

The V30 also features a “Full Vision” display. That means that the screen almost covers the entire front of the phone. While it’s big and can be difficult to operate with one hand, it’s far more manageable than other large phones like the Nexus 6.

This phone is also powerful and can handle even the most demanding apps. The battery life is surprisingly good (even if you plan to use it a lot). The large battery gives you more than enough juice to get through a full day. The addition of wireless charging is a nice feature that also charges the battery fairly quickly.

What we don’t like

Although the LG V30 is a great phone, there are a few drawbacks that are worth mentioning. Like many Android phone makers, LG has created their own customized software. Unfortunately, their custom software is pretty useless. It makes the icons look cartoonish, which is unexpected given the phone’s sleek design, and it adds extra features that make things more complicated rather than easier.

Another big issue is its screen. LG used a new OLED screen that should make the picture better. That’s not the case though. Instead, the quality of the screen is somehow worse. The colours are a bit off while the whites and blacks aren’t sharp. These issues aren’t what you’d expect from a “better” screen.

While the cameras are a major selling point of the V30, the front-facing camera could have been better designed. It’s not terrible but it also isn’t as good as those you’ll find on the iPhone X or Galaxy Note 8. While “top-quality selfies” may not be important to you, it’s still worth mentioning. With all these issues, the phone’s cost can be seen as questionable. While not priced overly high for a flagship phone, it's still expensive. With all the other excellent phones out there, it’s up for debate whether it gives you better value than its competitors.

Should you buy it?

The LG V30 goes a good job of living up to its expectations. With exceptional audio, an excellent camera, smooth performance, and solid battery life, the LG V30 is a great phone. If you’re really into music or photography, you really should take a look at this phone. If you’re just looking for a new high-end phone, it’s more of a debate. It is a great phone but you need to be sure you’ll be okay with the less-than-stunning screen and annoying software. If neither is a big deal, the LG V30 is worth considering.
