LaCie Fuel 1 To Review
The first mobile storage device designed by LaCie is hardly an upgrade from the previous collaboration by LaCie and Seagate. However, although there are no astonishingly new features, LaCie’s new storage device, the Fuel (1TB) still deserves recognition.
The main difference in the new LaCie Fuel (1TB) is the design. The device is small, square and kind of resembles a flooring tile to be honest. Being only 4.5 inches all around and .9 inches thick, you can put the LaCie Fuel virtually anywhere. On one corner of the device is tapered in with a hole in the center; there is no practical reason for this other than to make the design more appealing. Even though the LaCie Fuel is rather small, the device is bulky and kind of heavy, weighing in at 9.7 ounces.
Unfortunately, the LaCie only has one Micro USB – 3.0 Port. Compared to several other storage devices that come with several USB ports or FireWire ports, this is slightly disappointing. The provided micro USB port is used for both charging the device with power adapter and used to connect the 1 TB LaCie Fuel to a computer. For those times when you are just carrying the device with you, there is a small, easy to press power button on the side for quickly shutting down the device. A unique feature of the 1TB LaCie Fuel is that users can connect up to 5 devices to the device through the devices Wi-Fi feature. With 1TB of extra space available, there is plenty of room for everyone.
The Fuel also uses a well-designed and user-friendly mobile app for easy connectivity amongst several devices. Users can download the app onto any iOS, Android or Kindle Fire device. The app is also used to store your data into five categories: Video, Photo, Music, Documents and Recent. The LaCie Fuel runs smoothly and effortlessly, playing long HD videos within seconds. Users can also quickly search for what they want to watch or view in the apps search bar. However, users can only play videos that are supported by the app itself and cannot play videos that are supported by other formats such as Matroska.
The product has an impressive battery life. The device is able to be in use for up to 10 hours straight before needing to be recharged, however this is only appliable if used through LaCie’s Smart Power feature. The Smart Power feature turns off any sections of the device that are normally not in use on a regular basis. When traveling with the LaCie Fuel, such as on a plane or on the bus, the device is best used through the SeaGate app. The app will run through any available Wi-Fi networks, including ones where a password is required, if necessary. Content from your iPod or other Apple devices can be easily downloaded to the LaCie Fuel.
