Joby Gorillapod SLR-Zoom Review
Gorillapods have for a long time provided great flexibility when it comes to camera stands. For some time, these stands have been known to be very popular with smaller cameras due to the higher weight of the bigger cameras.
The Joby Gorillapod SLR-Zoom is very much like these common gorillapods only that it has a bigger weight capacity hence it can carry larger cameras. Let’s take a look at what you will be able to squeeze from the package. Simply put, the Joby Gorillapod SLR-Zoom is a 3 legged stand made from plastic and small bits of rubber. Its design is very similar to an octopus that has three tentacles that can be adjusted to take any shape that you want them to take. Each leg has been divided into 10 segments with 9 joints to give you enough flexibility to achieve almost any shape that you can think of.
Of course, the lowest segment has a slightly different design since it has been optimized for use as a stand. This last segment is rubberized to ensure that you get sufficient stability on almost any surface. The other segments also have rubber rings so that they can assist in providing ample support when the legs are wrapped around poles or trees. The mounting plate on this stand has been designed specifically with an aim of providing flexibility regardless of the tripod head that you are using. It has a quarter inch tripod screw that can be used with an adapter to make a 3/8 inch screw that is needed for a number of professional tripod heads.
There is an optional ballhead that can be used with the Joby Gorillapod SLR-Zoom. A small twist of the knob is all that is required to take the ball from free-moving to rock tight. However, the quality of this ball head is not the best especially considering the fact that it takes a lot of effort to tighten it to a camera. The most impressive aspect of the Joby Gorillapod SLR-Zoom is the weight capacity. Unlike most other gorillapads that will sag when used with heavy equipment, the SLR-Zoom is capable of giving impressive performance even with heavy cameras. According to Joby, the stand can hold up to 6.5 pounds, which is very impressive considering that you will be able to use it on almost any surface from poles to pavements. It’s therefore pretty obvious that you can comfortably use the SLR-Zoom as a flash stand without worries or anxiety.
However, it’s only exercise caution for your own good; it’s always advisable to ensure that you verify that the stand is stable enough before leaving it with equipment worth thousands of dollars. In summary, it’s not always possible to carry a full tripod stand every time you suspect that you’ll need to take some photos or videos. The Joby Gorillapod SLR-Zoom is small and compact enough to fit in almost any bag and it will do a job almost as good as that done by most tripod stands.
