Huawei Honor 8 Review

The 3-Minute Huawei Honor 8 Review

Solid performance at a reasonable price

The Specifics:

Features & Design: 4.5/5 ● Performance: 4/5 ● Value: 3.5/5

The Best:

The Huawei Honor 8 provides high-end functionality at a mid-range price. With a beautiful design, solid camera, and speedy performance, it’s a worthy mid-range smartphone contender.

The Bugs:

While the Honor 8 is a solid smartphone, it’s not without its drawbacks. The phone features solid performance but doesn’t have the battery to last through a day of moderate use. The software is clunky, the cheap speakers don’t do the audio any favours, it lacks waterproofing, and there are a lot of strong competitors that arguably offer better value.

Is it for you?

The Huawei Honor 8 provides good performance at an affordable price. If you’re looking to avoid the cost of a high-end phone, the Honor 8 serves as a solid option for those who are on a budget but don’t want sacrifice too much.

“If you’d like a taste of high-end functionality for a fraction of the price, you’ll likely be more than happy with this phone - just don’t expect the full experience.”

Meet the Huawei Honor 8

This latest addition to the Huawei Honor line, the Honor 8 is the Chinese manufacturer’s take on the “affordable flagship phone.” Using in-house technology, they have managed to create a phone with good performance and relatively few drawbacks. While not able to compete with the best of the best, the Honor 8 has received a good amount of attention for its attempt at making luxury performance accessible.

What we like

Perhaps the most notable benefit that the Huawei Honor 8 has to offer is its affordable price. While not necessarily a “budget” phone, it still gives you solid performance at a price that’s less than half that of its competitors. The design, while not groundbreaking, is beautiful and gives it a premium feel. The phone’s hardware is made in-house and rivals the top-of-the-line processors found in other Android phones and a microSD card slot means that you’ll be hard-pressed to run out of space.

The Honor 8 features a dual 12-MP camera with two lenses (one for colour and the other black-and-white). This dual lens let you take some beautiful photos, which is great if you’re constantly on Snapchat. All in all, there’s a lot to like about the Huawei Honor 8.

What we don’t like

Unfortunately, the Honor 8 is not without its drawbacks. The battery is perhaps the most serious offender. While the phone boasts solid performance, the battery only supports 3.5 hours of screen time. While this might be enough for a casual user, if you use your phone a lot, you’re going to have to reach for a charger before the day is through. In an age where most phones seem to last the entire day, it’s a major issue for this phone.

Another issue is Huawei’s Emotion UI software, which comes across as a clunky and unnecessary modification to the regular Android software. The phone also comes with a bunch of unnecessary apps that don’t provide a lot of value.

The phone’s speakers are unremarkable and don’t give you a very good listening experience. The absence of any waterproofing is a bit disappointing, especially since the back of the phone is rather slippery.

Should you buy it?

There’s no denying that the Huawei Honor 8 is a solid Android phone. If you’d like a taste of high-end functionality for a fraction of the price, you’ll likely be more than happy with this phone - just don’t expect the full experience. Casual users or people who don’t mind giving their phone a charge in the middle of the day will probably be very satisfied with the level of performance that Huawei Honor 8 has to offer. If you’re not sold, you can check out the OnePlus 3T, ZTE Axon 7, or LG G6.
