HTC U Ultra Review

The 3-Minute HTC U Ultra Review

Luxury that misses the mark

The Specifics:

Features & Design: 3.5/5 ● Performance: 4/5 ● Value: 3/5

The Best:

The HTC U Ultra is a beautifully designed flagship device that provides solid performance and unique functionality with its secondary screen.

The Bugs:

Premium performance comes with a premium price tag and we find the phone to be a little on the expensive side. Other problems like an easily dirtied finish, short battery life, absence of water resistance, and lack of a headphone jack further impact the phone’s quality.

Is it for you?

The HTC U Ultra is best suited for those who are looking for a big, high-end Android phone with a unique look. The secondary screen can be a useful feature and is able to provide some much needed extra functionality for some users.

“HTC’s take on the luxury smartphone provides some quality features, but, in the end, falls short.”

Meet the HTC U Ultra

As one of HTC’s more recent flagships, the HTC U Ultra is the company’s take on the luxury smartphone. In recent years, HTC has had trouble capturing the attention of a smartphone market that is largely dominated by bigger players like Samsung and Apple - despite producing some technically impressive phones.

While the U Ultra was released just a few months before the current flagship, the HTC U11, it still holds its own as a high-end Android device.

What we like

There’s a lot of good things about the HTC U Ultra. One of the most noticeable aspects of the phone is its unique metal and glass “mirror” finish design. In a sea of smartphones full of largely predictable designs in colours like black and white, it’s nice to see a high-end phone change it up a bit.

The display is another great feature. The 5.7-inch display is full of vibrant colours and rich blacks when you're watching videos or playing games. The phone also features a secondary screen. While the HTC U Ultra isn’t the first phone to do this, it provides a nice place to see important info like message notifications, the weather, or the time.

The device performs well under pressure with a respectable Snapdragon 821 processor. The operating system is also quick and responsive (since it comes with minimal bloatware) which leads to a nice user experience that takes full advantage of the phone’s hardware.

What we don’t like

While there’s a lot that’s positive about the HTC U Ultra, there are also some pretty significant drawbacks that mar what would otherwise be a great smartphone. The mirror finish, while in some ways a benefit, also collects dust and fingerprints very easily. The smaller battery is disappointing. Many flagships nowadays will easily last all day, but that’s not the case for the U Ultra. The lack of a headphone jack is also saddening, but this is by no means a drawback unique to this phone.

The lack of water resistance is also unfortunate, but even more frustrating is the price tag that’s attached to the phone. While it’s less expensive than its original price, the U Ultra is still a little pricey once you take into account some of the issues we’ve mentioned.

Should you buy it?

There’s a pretty specific niche of buyers that the HTC U Ultra is suited for. Customers who value aesthetics and unique design over utility will be more than satisfied with the HTC U Ultra.

Unfortunately, for the rest of us, the U Ultra falls short. While the performance and display are top-notch, the short battery life is inexcusable in a market where phones are lasting longer and longer. Even with a discount, the phone is a little overpriced. HTC’s take on the luxury smartphone provides some quality features, but, in the end, falls short.
