HTC Desire Review

  • 4.0 / 5
    • The good:
Good build and design, Impressive phonebook and messaging system, Complete set of connectivity options, Decent image quality
    • The bad:
No dedicated camera key, Substandard video quality and support
Measuring 119 x 60 x 11.9 mm and weighing 135 g, with a big 3.7” screen, may seem bulky but because of HTC Desire’s beautiful finish, it is still manageable on the hands and pleasing to the eyes. The built was proven to be sturdy. The phone’s 3.7” capacitive AMOLED touchscreen highlights good image quality although quality takes a few steps back when used under direct sunlight. Just below the screen are the classic Android Back, Menu, Home, and Search keys. Pressing these controls pose no problem. At the center is a trackpad which, due to the phone’s impressive capacitive touchscreen, HTC could’ve done away with. The top side of HTC Desire hosts the Screen/Power key and the 3.5mm audio jock while the mouthpiece is found at the bottom side. At the left side of the phone you will find the volume rocker while the right side is completely free from any key or port. HTC Desire continued to use what the HTC Hero pioneered – HTC Sense UI. Since Desire has the latest Android v2.1, the Sense UI runs better. Icons were improved and a unified Widget section is introduced. Six homescreens or Scenes are available. These six were already pre-determined in terms of content although the user could still rearrange the widgets to make it customized. The handheld’s phonebook has the perfect design: simple to use and yet highly informative. Opening the phonebook gives you the basic details you need. When you look at the bottom of the screen however, you would know that the phonebook gives you everything you could ask for in an organized manner. The second tab provides the messages specific for your chosen contact while the third gives you the e-mails. The fourth showcases a great social networking integration. The last gives you the call history. Call quality is also good and smart dialing is provided. Apart from composing a message which could be stressful due to lack of space available, messaging is superb. Despite not having a dedicated camera key and still has a lot of room for improvements, HTC Desire’s 5mp camera is decent enough. The interface is nice and various settings are available. Advanced options such as face and smile detection are not included but the image quality would suffice. Video quality however is far from excellent. It offers WVGA videos at 15fps with a good resolution but colors and details make the videos rather disappointing. Also, it doesn’t support DivX and XviD videos. A good number of settings are made available however. The phone is free from any connectivity issues as it offers everything the user needs. HTC Desire also provides an excellent mobile browsing experience with its double tap zooming capability which greatly matters when reading lengthy text and its Flash support; although users should not expect much from Flash video content. The minimalist UI which is distinctive of Android browsers still proves it desirability.
