GoPro HERO 3+ Silver Edition Review
The GoPro Hero 3 Silver Edition is one of these devices that will give you a hard time when choosing thanks to the many small but relevant differences that the different models come with. Let’s take a look to see if this action camera has what it takes to compete against the many challengers already in the market.
Generally, GoPro cameras have been built to deliver impressive acrobatics when it comes to action filming. This device from the already renowned company does not lag behind. From the design all the way to the performance, the camera does its best to give its users the best experience regardless of whether they are filming while on a bike, inside a car or even when using a surfboard. One of the main unique aspects of this device is the positioning. Unlike most others action cameras that are laid on the front side of the helmet, the Hero 3 Silver Edition has a square shape. This shape makes it hard to position it on the side of the helmet. To solve this problem, GoPro designers decided to mount it on top of helmets. This may feel awkward at first, especially for users who are used to cameras that easily fit on the side of helmets. However, after some time this will not be an issue. It also comes with an array of mounting accessories that make mounting easy regardless of the application.
When it comes to the design, the GoPRo Hero 3 comes with a simple design that also makes it easy to use. The front side has the lens and a small LCD display. This display is monochrome, but it still serves the purpose. Below the screen, you’ll get a large power button. This power button is so far the largest when compared to the GoPro Hero 2 and the classic GoPro Digital Hero 5. The top houses the record button while the right face has a plastic cover that has a microSD slot and two ports (One miniUSB and a micro HDMI). The Hero 3 Silver Edition can record 1080p videos with saturated colours, crisp details and excellent contrast. All this is done at 30 frames per second, which is impressive among action cameras. For an extra $100 or so, you can get the black edition that shoots the same videos at an impressive 60 frames per second among other extras.
The camera by itself is light and compact. It weighs only 2.7 ounces and measures 2.25 by 1.6 by 1.2 inches. However, it’s not waterproof. To make it waterproof, you need to place it inside a cover. The cover has been custom made specifically for this camera and it makes it waterproof up to a depth of 197 feet. However, you’ll also have to deal with more weight and size. When the cover is mounted, the total weight comes to 6.2 ounces. One amazing feature of the GoPro Hero 3 Silver Edition is the added Wi-Fi connectivity. With the iOS app form GoPro, you can connect this camera to your phone and use your phone as a remote for the camera. You can even connect and use the app on more than one camera at the same time. The most interesting feature is a “locate camera” feature that makes the camera to beep and alert you of its location.
