Fujifilm X-T30 / 18-55mm Kit Review
The 3-Minute Fujifilm X-T30 Review
Last year, Fujifilm unveiled X-T2, the surpassing APS-C sensor. With a 26.1MP X-Trans 4 backside-illuminated (BSI) sensor, it edged the X-T2 in autofocus, video, speed, and ergonomics. Fujifilm extended its lead on Sony, by launching the X-T30 with the same sensor and image quality the X-T3 has, for a whopping $600 less.
The X-T30 is chock-full with useful features. This includes full APS-C 4K video, shooting speeds up to 30fps and AI-powered face- and eye-detection autofocus. All this goodness is stuffed into a lightweight, crisp body design that is great for street photography and travel.
The X-T30’s viewfinder is brighter than the X-T20’s and is more responsive with a 0.005-second lag and very smooth 100fps refresh rate. The autofocus system is better than the X-T3’s.
The four-way D-pad has made way for an eight-way autofocus joystick that is used to navigate menus. The Q-button (for quick access to basic settings) also has a slightly different position.
Fujifilm has toned down the 3-inch touchscreen display to become slimmer. The display still pulls out and articulates vertically, but won’t fully flip to face forward for vlogging.
There’s a 2.5mm microphone jack among the X-T30’s ports, but to monitor audio as you record video, use USB-C headphones or a USB-C-to-3.5mm adapter. Fujifilm supports USB 3.1, ensuring full operation of the camera when a charger or an external battery pack (with USB Power Delivery) is plugged in.
A single SD/SDHC/SDXC card slot is found right next to the battery slot. There is no support for UHS-II standard, though they can be used without any performance advantage.
Features & Design: 4/5 | Performance: 5/5 | Value: 5/5 | Battery Life: 3/5
The X-T30’s X-Trans CMOS APS-C image sensor and it's X-Processor Pro 4 are the best parts of this classy camera. It’s three times faster than the previous third-generation version and brings unique light-gathering capability and image quality to the Fujifilm X-T30.
A DPReview.com user has reported one bug when switching from one custom setting to another (say C1 to C2). Rather than switch, it clears any saved settings saved in the three Auto ISO options – Default Sensitivity, Maximum Sensitivity, and Minimum Shutter Speed) - and sets them back to factory default. It’s not a major issue, but it’s disconcerting for a camera this good.
Is it for you?
The X-T30 is for enthusiasts looking for a backup body, or anyone looking to take the next steps from a more junior model. It is feature-stuffed to please its target audience.
What we like
The Fujifilm X-T30’s new sensor is highly dependable, and the processor is fast. The autofocus and burst shooting (Sports Finder mode included) has seen some changes, and while these are not celebrated, they make the difference to everyday shooting.
Many of the annoying quirks of other cameras are noticeably absent on the X-T30, indicating that Fujifilm continues to pay attention to big and small details alike.
What we don’t like
Cramming a lot of technology and performance into a very small body might be the X-T30’s biggest albatross. It is really easy to press buttons by accident, and bigger lenses will inevitably make it feel heavy at the front.
Should you buy it?
Except for the grip, which makes it appear Fujifilm thinks we all have small hands, this is a camera with an excellent level of features for its price. The great build quality and dependable performance where it really matters means this a highly capable mid-class mirrorless camera you can consider.
