Fractal Design Define S Review
The one thing you will love about Fractal Design Define S is that it has a custom housing for liquid cooling loops. Fractal Design has gone a long way to remove all the unnecessary components from inside the chassis for a cleaner look. The exterior is sturdy and gives you confidence that your hardware components inside will be properly protected. The case is comparatively hefty. However, intelligent designing has ensured that its cost is well within the limits of most buyers.
Fractal Design Define S is a computer case with a lot of improvements from the previous designs. The front panel is more or less similar to the standard cases with two USB 3.0 ports, microphone and headphone jacks and power and reset buttons. There are no port holes for liquid coolers because the design of the case is intended for liquid cooling hardware. The side panels are noise dampening, allowing you to work in peace. Inside the front panel there is support for three 120mm radiators and 140mm units. As you explore further, you see the card space measuring 17.8” but the space gets reduced if the fans are thicker or when the radiator is installed. The motherboard depth can be up to 9.9” to fit inside the case. Since there are no front cages inside the case, various liquid cooling devices can be accommodated inside. The case is durable and protects the components inside properly.
Is it durable?
Fractal Design Define S is made of premium components and offers the kind of durability you require. One of the side panels is made of glass and you may think durability has been compromised here. But the glass is tough and in any case, you wouldn’t be playing around with it. On a positive side, the side glass panel does add a touch of beauty to this case.
Does it protect my computer properly?
Fractal Design has removed all those components of its case that are not really useful any more. The Define S case is ergonomic and has the right slots for all the hardware components. The glass side panel lets you have a clear look at the hardware inside, including the liquid cooling components. The build of the case is sturdy and you should have no issues on the protection front.
Conclusion: Should I buy it ?
In terms of looks, Fractal Design Define S is surely a stunner. The front panel is consistent with the Define series of cases and the cover has a dust filter behind which the fans or the radiator can be installed. There is lot of space inside (because there is no HDD cage in this case) for efficient placing of the hardware components, including the large liquid cooling loop reservoir. For a price less than USD 100 and an excellent build quality, this case is certainly a good buy.
