DELL UltraSharp U2412M Review
The DELL UltraSharp U2412M is a 24-inch LED monitor with E-IPS (enhanced In-Plane Switching) panel, a superior display technology compared to the more common TN display. IPS panels produce more accurate colors and offer wider angle of view without color distortion, a characteristics common with LCD monitors.
The U2412M is priced lower than the U2410 as it is powered by the more energy-saving LED and has less connection ports. As the U2410's successor, this monitor is different from the rest of the pack in several ways. For one, it offers the now-rare 1920x1200 (16:10) native resolution - most 24" screens utilize cheaper 1920x1080 (16:9). With a 1,920 x 1,200 pixel resolution, it has noticeably more vertical space than most monitors, which have a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels. This extra space is useful for tasks that benefit from more screen resolution, such as photo editing and viewing web pages.
The UltraSharp U2412M can be titled, rotated, swiveled into portrait mode and its height raised or lowered. Height adjustment is sadly a rare feature on monitors at this price, so it's a welcome addition. The stand is very sturdy too. This UltraSharp model doesn't support auto-rotation so you'll have to change the screen orientation in your graphics card's control panel. It also has a four-port USB2 hub built in, which can help to save space on your desktop. Oddly, while it has DVI, VGA and Display port connectors it lacks an HDMI port, although this isn't a big problem as nearly all PCs will have one of the other connectors you can use.
The on-screen menu is accessible using four buttons on the lower right-hand side of the bezel. The sharpness, brightness and contrast can be tweaked very easily. It's also possible to switch between inputs, should you have more than one computer connected to it. Picture setting are plentiful. There are five picture presets (Standard, Movie, Multimedia, Game, Text) and a Color Temperature slider with adjustments from 5000k to 10,000k. So, you can make the picture cooler or warmer. In addition to Brightness and Contrast, you can select an input source, toggle between RGB (computer) and YPbPr (component) color spaces, set gamma for use with a PC or a Mac, and adjust sharpness, clock and phase settings. Hue and saturation adjustments are available when operating in Movie or Game modes, and there's a dynamic dimming feature that when enabled will automatically reduce the brightness level according to white content on the screen.
The IPS panel delivered rich colors with very good gradation on the DisplayMate Color Scales test and showed no evidence of tinting in the grayscale. Light grays were well defined all the way up to the very brightest shade, but the two darkest shades of gray were indistinguishable. That said, dark grayscale performance was still significantly better than what you get from a Twisted Nematic+ (TN+) panel. The panel had no trouble displaying fonts set to 6 points on the Scaled Fonts test but when the font size was lowered to 5.3 points some of the fonts lost definition. Games looked very good on this monitor. Movies shared the same pleasant quality. You can look at this monitor from whichever angle and it will show content in the same superb quality.
The U2412M used 16-watts of power while running in Standard mode, which has a preset brightness of 20-percent. this setting was found to be a tad too dim, when the brightness was bumped up to 40-percent, power usage in turn bumped up to 20-watts. This kind of energy earns the U2412M a Greentech stamp of approval. Overall, the DELL UltraSharp U2412M offers very good on-screen performance, multiple input types, a flexible design, and wide viewing angles. If you looking for a good all round screen then this would be a great choice, and it makes another great addition to Dell's monitor range.
