Canon EF 100mm F/2.8 Macro USM Review

The Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM is a lens for Canon digital SLR cameras that has become an all-around lens that can compete with the L series except for the fact that it is a lot cheaper. Its built is notable. Its metal exterior assures longer usage but it is the same reason for its weight. It is kind of heavy. It would be a little hard to handle it steadily and a tripod collar needs to be purchased for this lens. Although the 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM is fast, it isn’t that fully impressive. Automatic focusing takes some time that contributes to the necessity of having a tripod. If compared with the 60mm, this is definitely better. Although the 60mm is more all-around, the additional 40mm is a big deal. If used indoor, don’t expect the 100mm to be lightning fast, though. Plus, the 60mm is cheaper and this lens has circular aperture. This 60mm lens has speed and a lot lighter in weight than the 100mm. This weight doesn’t make it handy when going hiking or strolling. The 100mm lens can create remarkable sharp images with its color and saturation. But just like other macro lens, the aperture has to be closed and an external flash is needed. With the additional flash and the tripod, the cost of the lens would become pricier. When this is used as a portrait lens it performs really well. The Bokeh is striking; the images are detailed and razor-sharp. It is definitely a step higher than the kit lens for those who are just starting-up a career on photography. The 60mm is cheaper, the L series are more expensive, however, this lens will surely fit into the budget. One drawback is that it doesn’t have the Image Stability feature which is crucial to this lens. Its weight definitely makes the hands tired and eventually shake. The Image Stability saves the user from this problem, nevertheless, since there is no IS, the tripod is a must-buy. All in all, the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM is a lens that fits into the budget of those who are aiming to have a career in photography. Its autofocus is a little slow when in less lighted places but it is sharp in everything else. It is less pricey compared to other lenses, although somewhat heavy, it is tolerable to those who are serious photographers. It is definitely worth a try.
