Brother MFC-J6510DW Review

The Brother MFC-J6510DW is a color photo printer quipped with wireless technology. It can print, scan, copy, and fax. The MFC-J6510DW has a very large, broad footprint (540 x 489 x 257 mm) and weighs a decidedly hefty 15.8kg. Nevertheless, to be fair to Brother, it has at least styled it in its usual matt black and has made some attempt to make it compact wherever possible. But the very size of the paper it can handle governs its footprint. However, the 250-sheet paper tray is telescopic, so if you only occasionally print A3 pages, you don't have to have the tray extending from the front of the machine. There’s no single-sheet, multi-purpose feed, though, as you have to empty the main tray to print even one photo. The top surface of the machine includes a 35-sheet Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) with a flip-over feed tray, which is both high-gloss and high-static, attracting every little speck of dust. The control panel is well laid out; there’s plenty of room, because of the wide front to the machine. The left-hand end is devoted to a set of 16 quick-access fax numbers and buttons to get at particular print features, such as duplex and copying. To the immediate left of the 83mm, widescreen LCD panel are four illuminated mode buttons and to its right is the usual cross of navigation buttons, a number pad for dialling and start and stop buttons for scan and copy jobs. Setting up this model is very straightforward. Just open the flap on the front-left of the printer, insert the four ink cartridges and then load the drivers onto your PC. The printer can be used directly via USB. Alternatively, you can hook it into your network using either Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Like this machine's print engine, its scanner can also work with A3 pages, so you can produce direct one-to-one copies of larger documents. The scanner has a resolution of 19,200x19,200 dpi and scans generally looked pretty crisp and clear, which also helped this machine to deliver good quality copies. The copier function took 20 seconds to complete a copy of our A4 test sheet, which is not particularly fast. The fax functions are standard, but the automatic document feeder is a great time saver when faxing multi-page documents. The quick-dial keys are handy if you regularly have to fax a lot of documents to the same numbers. Print speeds are fairly good by inkjet standards. Photo printing is slow, however. It worked on a 4x6-inch snap for 1 minute 7 seconds, whereas most inkjets are capable of printing this type of photo in around 40 seconds. Printing an A3 picture at the best quality was also slow, taking 8 minutes 24 seconds. Print quality for graphics is actually impressive. There was no discernible banding. The detail and sharpness levels are good. Photo print-outs also look impressive for a four-ink model. However, text quality isn't quite as good. Text looks a little light on the page and letters aren't as cleanly formed as on the best inkjet models. Although it's a big, broad beast, the Brother MFC-J6510DW multifunction printer produces good quality A3 prints at a much improved rate, offers plenty of connectivity options and is currently at a price that makes it highly desirable.
