Blackmagic Design Cinema Camera Review
Blackmagic is not known for making high quality cameras - until now. Up to now, they were a software and post production company. So for them to hit the market with a professional grade cinema camera right out of the box took a lot of the experts by surprise.
The Blackmagic Cinema Camera is a small, handheld size camera that performs like much more expensive models. First of all, it shoots RAW files at 2.5k resolution. Most files are shot with some form of compression. RAW files are uncompressed, which retain higher levels of detail and dynamic range, and can be edited without losing quality. This is a big deal because it allows photo editing outputting to 1080p to crop the image without using detail.
The Blackmagic Cinema Camera was created for independent filmmakers. Indy’s, for short. It’s not meant for rough and tumble location shots, but for a more refined production facility operating on a budget.
The Blackmagic Cinema Camera doesn’t look like your normal camera. It’s square and simple looking, which makes it a wonder of portability, but lacks ergonomics. However, it’s not made for hand held use, but rather for attaching to a shoulder rig or tripod mount.
The Cinema Camera isn’t really made for stand-alone use. The battery life is only around 90 minutes, so you will want to purchase a backup battery pack.
The battery charge time is approximately 1 hour 15 minutes with the camera off. The onboard microphone is pretty basic, so you will want to use an external mic and plug it into the ¼” jack.
In addition to its 2.5k image sensor, the Blackmagic Cinema Camera also has 13 stops of dynamic range for lots of versatility. It has a built in SSD recorder, both open standard uncompressed RAW and compressed file formats, and compatibility with EF and ZE mount lenses. It also features a 5” touchscreen, so you can do adjustments right from the LCD display.
The left side of the camera has a full set of connectors. You get mic and line inputs, a 3GB/sec SDI output for onset monitoring, a 12v to 30v DC input for battery and external power, 3.5mm headphone jack, LANC remote control and a high speed Thunderbolt port.
The right hand side has a Solid State Drive (SD) slot for serious memory storage. If you use a 480GB SSD, you can pack up to 5 hours recording time on it.
The Ultrascope waveform software can display Waveform, Histogram, and Vectorscope signal measurement. Connect to a computer to display 6 live scope views, and gives you the ability to display picture view, audio, and phase monitoring.
Another bonus is the DaVinci Resolve 11 software. This gives you the ability to make color corrections in post-production, using the same technology used by some of the leading cinematographers.
The Blackmagic Cinema Camera is an incredibly featured camera for a cost that is lower than many others with less features, and is truly a professional quality camera for a bargain price!
