Asus Zenbook UX430UQ-Q72SP I7-7500U Review

A portable powerhouse

Features & Design: 4/5 ● Performance: 4/5 ● Value: 3.5/5
The best feature of the Zenbook is its performance which is supported by great battery life and a compact, portable design. Its screen is worth mentioning and so is the quality of the speakers.
The cooling system is less than perfect and the lack of a full-size HDMI is baffling. The keyboard has also come under criticism for its lack of responsiveness.
Is it for you?
Despite the issues with its keyboard, the Asus Zenbook UX430UQ is a top shelf laptop that offers great performance. If your day-to-day excursions require you to bring your laptop with you, then the portability of the Zenbook will come in handy. If you're a college student, you'll appreciate the high performance for projects and the larger screen for watching the latest episode of Suits.
“If you can get used to the keyboard and have some room in your bag to carry around an HDMI dongle, the Asus Zenbook UX430UQ is a portable powerhouse that will last most of the day without needing to be charged.”
Meet the Asus Zenbook UX430UQ
It’s been a while since Dell introduced the concept of squeezing bigger displays on smaller laptops and it is refreshing to see Asus adopt the concept with its Zenbook UX430 series. The Asus Zenbook UX430UQ comes at a slightly higher price than the other models, but this isn’t surprising as it comes with dedicated Nvidia graphics.
The Zenbook feels sturdy to the touch thanks to an inner plastic frame that is covered with aluminium sheets. Some of the Zenbook laptops are not equipped with an aluminium hood and, instead, have a flexible crystal-like coating made using nano-imprinting lithography (NIL) technology. This finish gives the lid a glass-like look and feel while still being durable.
What we like
We like a lot about this laptop. For starters, its performance is off the charts. The Zenbook can take on everything from Microsoft Office to some intense multitasking. For gamers, the Nvidia graphics card will be able to handle most games, although you’ll have to lower some quality settings with newer games. The thin and compact design is a plus. So is the battery life, which can last for over 10 hours.
Then there is the screen: the laptop has a 13-inch chassis but a 14-inch display that still leaves enough space for microphones and a camera so you don't have to deal with framing when you make Skype calls. The bottom line is that you get to enjoy a large display while not having to deal with a bulky laptop.
What we don’t like
The NIL finishing is supposed to be a positive, but we don’t really find it that great. As much as we appreciate the polished look, we don’t like its tendency to show fingerprints and smudges.
The keyboard has garnered some criticism due to its relatively unresponsive keys. There are complaints that the keyboard’s lack of feedback can lead to a lot of typos. If you’re planning to use this laptop to write reports for work or school, it’s something to keep in mind.
We are also not okay with the decision to go without a full-size HDMI port as there is space available for it. If you buy this laptop, you will need a dongle to connect an HDMI cord. Needing to carry that around with you all the time somewhat reduces the attractiveness of the laptop’s portability.
Should you buy it?
The Asus Zenbook UX430UQ is light, compact, and powerful. The battery performs very well in the real world, so you’ll be able to go for a while in between charges. However, the need for an HDMI dongle and keyboard issues means that it is far from perfect. There is also the issue of the easily smudged lid cover, but there are models without it. If you can get used to the keyboard and have some room in your bag to carry around an HDMI dongle, the Asus Zenbook UX430UQ is a portable powerhouse that will last most of the day without needing to be charged. It can especially be good for busy professionals or students who are constantly running between meetings or classes. Just remember not to forget the HDMI dongle for that big presentation.
