ASUS ZenBook UX430UA-DH74 I7-8550U Review

A Value Oriented Ultrabook
By Graeme Messina | February 12, 2018
Features & Design: 4/5 ● Performance: 4/5 ● Value: 4/5
The ASUS ZenBook UX430UA is a leek and slim Ultrabook that offers great aesthetics, as well as decent performance. This is thanks to the Intel i7-7500U Dual Core CPU that the system has been paired with, along with 8GB of DDR4 SDRAM. It features good performance in a light weight and slim package. The backlit keyboard feels crisp and the tactile feedback and key travel is in line with other similarly priced Ultrabook keyboards.
There aren’t too many negatives with this unit, which is great news for anyone looking to get their hands on a mid-level, premium Ultrabook. Track pad reliability is questionable at times for some users, but our test model had no issues in this regard. Prospective owners expecting to game on this unit will be left out in the cold for the most part, as the unit ships with an Intel HD Graphics 620 integrated GPU. When under heavy loads you can expect this unit to get a little hot as well, mainly due to the limited space inside for heat dissipation. The HDMI port is not full size, but rather the Micro HDMI standard, so be wary of that as well.
Is it for you?
If you are a traveler or somebody that likes to be productive while commuting, then this would be a good choice for you due to its light weight and compact design. The manufacturer promises 9 hours’ worth of battery life, but your mileage may vary, depending on what you are doing on the system. Other than being very practical, the ZenBook also manages to wow people with its unique color and slim chassis, so style fans will also appreciate this unit.
Meet the Asus ZenBook UX430UA
Whatever you think about Ultrabooks, there is no denying their sleek looks and slim profile. This is made especially more pronounced when one considers the high end performance that models such as the ZenBook offers. A high quality glossy finish completes this package’s aesthetics, and makes it a premium choice for anyone looking to get themselves a highly portable, light and powerful Ultrabook.
What we like
We love the slim footprint that this device uses, as well as its nippy performance and light weight. This particular model, with its deep blue color and glossy finish makes it feel especially solid, like a premium device should.
The battery is nothing short of stellar, with the device easily surviving meetings and trips out of the office without needing to be plugged into the mains outlet for a charge.
The overall build quality is solid, making this ultrathin Ultrabook feel every bit as solid as a full thickness laptop, which is reassuring when one considers how thin this unit is. Connectivity options are there as well, with USB 3 Type A and C, and Micro HDMI for display output.
What we don’t like
While the ports that are available on this device are great for newer devices like USB 3 and USB C, there aren’t that many of them. This will limit your total amount of devices that you can connect at any one time, but as this is a portable solution you probably won’t be connecting too many devices to it at once anyway.
Should you buy it?
If you are in the market for an ultra slim and portable laptop that has excellent specs and performance to match, then this is a great choice. It is lightweight yet sturdy, and offers a quality finish that has a premium feel.
This device is just as at home on the road as it is sitting on your desk as your main Windows device, making it an all-round winner in our books. This is an Ultrabook that is definitely worth considering if you are looking for a light weight portable power house without the need to play the latest gaming titles.
