Astro A40 Review
The A40 wireless gaming system from Astro strives to achieve one purpose-to give the gamer the best quality audio with the highest level of comfort.
Basically, the Astro A40 sound system is made up of the MixAmp 5.8 and a pair of the famous A40stereo headphones. The MixAmp 5.8 is the force behind the wireless transmission of the sound signal from the game console to the headphones. These two components of the A40 systems may be bought separately, but Astro has bundled them up into one item that they have called the Astro A40 Wireless System. Unlike many of the gaming headsets available, the pair that comes with the A40 wireless system is very light.
Comfort is not a problem with these headsets because they are fully adjustable and padded to ensure that the user is as comfortable as possible. The screws and wiring are visible with a wire that comes from the left ear cup and goes to a plug that can be attached to either the audio and video cable or the audio only cable depending on the need. This pair of headsets also comes with an adjustable microphone that can be attached to any of the ear cups. This is one of the unique aspects of this headset that goes a long way in ensuring that the user gets unmatched comfort. The MixAmp 5.8 system is comprised of two items. The first one is the oval shaped small receiver and the other one is the base transmitter.
The oval shaped receiver is the one that has to be connected to the headset. This receiver comes with a mixer that will enable the user to get the desired output by balancing the game and the voice chat stream. There is also an allowance for boosting the bass on this receiver. The other item, the transmitter, is a box that is placed next to the game console. It can take the normal headphone jack or a Toslink connection. The Toslink connection works perfectly if you are looking for surround sound. The bottom part has been designed for audio pass-through that takes the sound back to the home theater system to eliminate the need to keep plugging and unplugging cables.
The rear part of this transmitter has two USB ports, and auxiliary input port and a power port. The USB ports are very useful when you need to connect the device with a PS3 for game chat. The front part is simple with only a power button and an on/off Dolby Digital switch. Setting up is easy, since you only need to perform three steps. First, you need to power the transmitter. Second, you need to connect the respective input cables in their ports on the transmitter. Finally, you should connect the headset to the receiver and you will be good to go. The process will be hectic if you need to use more than one console, but it will be easier if you have a Toslink-out connection.
