Apple IPad 10.2 LTE 32GB Review
The 3-Minute Apple iPad 10.2 Review
Apple's iPad 10.2 is Engineered for the Future
Apple upped the ante at its September 2019 keynote event. The company debuted the 7th-generation iPad 10.2, with a more conspicuous display weighing in at 10.2 inches. It supports the 1st-generation Apple Pencil, along with a Smart Connector for the full-sized Smart keyboard cover.
This iPad 10.2 represents a shift from the standard 9.7-inch display tradition. It is fully compatible with the tablet-specific iPadOS which Apple also recently debuted.
The display offers 3.5 million pixels, powered by Apple’s A10 Fusion chip. The processor is expected to make iPads two times faster than Microsoft’s runaway tablet success, the Surface. The A10 still lags compared with the A12X Bionic processor doing the heavy lifting in modern-day iPad Pro models. That said, it is still impressive for a budget iPad.
The iPad 10.2 offers a wider viewing angle (3.7x) than the Surface tablet, and weighs just about one pound. The environmentally-friendly enclosure is made from 100 percent recyclable aluminium. There is no Face ID facial recognition on this device, but the Touch ID sensor within the home button is present. The Face ID tech is exclusive to Pro models.
The Apple iPad 10.2 promises a battery life of 10 hours which will keep most users happy.
The Smart Connector interface on the edge of the iPad provides access to an impressive array of high-end accessories built for the iPad Pro and iPad Air. A direct connection to Apple’s keyboard is a superior experience to a Bluetooth keyboard.
Rather than the flexible USB-C found on the iPad Pro, the 10.2 sports a Lightning connector, along with a headphone jack.
A modest 8MP rear camera and a 1.2MP front-facing camera are a sharp contrast to the iPhones launched at the same keynote. This iPad is more or less a flexible, powerful competitor to a Chromebook or low-priced Windows laptop.
Features & Design: 4/5 | Performance: 4/5 | Value: 4/5 | Battery Life: 4/5
The fact that Apple intentionally engineered this device to have full compatibility with the new iPadOS is something to write home about. This translates to desktop-class browsing through Safari, a pop-up, on-display keyboard that supports one-handed typing, and more efficient multitasking than ever.
The iPadOS is new and offers excellent functionality, but it’s best to stay tuned for any updates on any issues that will likely arise.
Is it for you?
If your goal is the Apple experience, and you are on a budget, this device is recommended. It’s not significantly superior to its 9.7-inch predecessor, but it is clearly engineered for the future. Go for it!
What we like
Apple is including support for another promised iPad Pro feature – the ability to connect an SD card and a thumb drive to directly interact with the Files application. This gives entry-level iPad owners a taste of the Mac experience. Screenshots are even easier, and you can now capture entire web pages as PDFs.
What we don’t like
The 1st-generation Apple Pencil and the Smart Keyboard are great tools that improve efficiency but making them separate purchases is not really encouraging.
Should you buy it?
Considering there’s also a full free year of access to Apple TV Plus – a £60 value – and one month of Apple Arcade (£4.99), this might be worth the investment. Other than that, there really aren’t many reasons to buy the iPad 10.2.
