Acer Predator X34 Review
- 100Hz + adaptive refresh rate tech
- 3440 x 1440 resolution
- Curved 34" IPS display panel
- ms response time
The Predator X34 is a series of gaming centered monitors offered by Acer. This series offers two variants of 34-inch curved display monitors, both distinguished by either having NVIDIA G-SYNC or AMD Freesync adaptive refresh rate technologies. Those synchronize monitor refresh rates to the users graphics card, reducing input lag and smoothing frame rates. The monitor is also equipped with a 4ms response time, for snappy feedback when playing games.
What are the ports and interface ?
The Acer Predator X34 has the following input ports; 4 x USB 3.0 ports, 1 HDMI port, and 1 DisplayPort input. The Acer Predator X3 was designed to look elegant and modern : with a thin bezel and a slight curve radius that does not over exaggerate, rounding the corners nicely to bring the sides of the screen to your peripherals. It should be noted however that the curved screen is a nice touch for a gaming monitor, with one persona as the primary viewer. With multiple people viewing, such as a TV, the curve can become less practical and distracting. There are six buttons on the right-bottom panel area : these allow for navigating through settings, and turning on and off. This setup takes some getting used to, and feels a bit outdated!
What is the overall performance ?
The display of the Acer monitor was fairly bright and requires little adjustment straight out of the box. The saturation was slightly overdone and needed to be scaled back to create a more neutral state. Adjusting color, gamma, brightness and contrast are nevertheless simple and easy to do for this monitor. Games or video content that does not match the 21:9 aspect ratio of this Acer computer monitors ultra-wide 34" screen, will likely not fill the entire screen and have black borders either side. The 3440x1440 resolution provided ample amounts of screen space to multiple programs at once, offering much more screen real-estate than the average monitor.
What is the sound quality ?
The X34 comes with two 7 watt DTS sound integrated speakers for audio playback. While these may be alright for causal use, the x34 was designed for serious gaming, as such, external speakers are recommended.
What are the modes available ?
There are three available Overdrive (OD) impulse setting modes, these can be accessed via the settings menu and change the screens response times. Options exist for turning OD "off", to "normal", or "extreme". The more OD the sharper the image is generally made. Normal mode provides the most balanced and optimal results. Another great feature of the X34 is the ability to overclock the refresh rate to 100Hz; this provides noticeable difference, particularly in games.
Conclusion: Should I buy it ?
If you are a serious gamer or a tech enthusiast, then this high-price Acer screen is packed with top of the line features that are well worth it. The adaptive refresh rate technology provides an amazing entertainment experience from an Acer LCD or LED monitor that is hard to match; combined with the large 34" curved display that makes for an engrossing gaming or video experience that would be hard to beat with a standard smaller, or flat panel monitor.
