What to look for in 3D printers?

Printing materials

Depending on the printing material 3D printers can be classified. The most popular materials used for the spool or coil are acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) or polylactic acid (PLA). These are thermoplastics in nature and therefore can be heated to make it flexible. Other than these two, you may get materials like • Nylon 618: It has white and can by dyed in any colour. Because of its bio-compatibility it is used in the medical industry. • Resin: It has smooth and rich texture. As it may get discoloured on UV exposure, items printed with resin are varnished after printing. • Wood: In this the coil is made of recycled wood and a binding polymer. The printed item looks, feels and even smells like wood. • HIPS or High Impact Polystyrene: It is widely used as support material. The adhesion problems can be reduced with a heated bed during the process of printing. • Stainless Steel: A combination of hybrid stainless steel and bronze is used as the coil. It is the hardest 3D printing materials.

3D Printing attributes

• Build volume/Print Area: The build area decides the size of the object that can be printed in a 3D printing machine. For desktop 3D printers it is 380mm³. The maximum size that has been handled is 1m³. • Printing speed: A desktop 3D printer can print 40 to 150 mm of molten filament per second. Speed of printing reduces with higher printing resolution. The speed also varies depending on the filament material used and nature of the item to be printed. • Layer resolution: Resolution of a 3D printed object can be selected just like printing a 2D photograph. The item looks smoother if printed at a higher resolution and it has fine layers that are not identifiable always. In many printers one can select the maximum and minimum value for the layer resolution. • Extruders: In extruder the printing material is heated for extrusion. It typically has heated printing nozzle (through which the molten material is forced out with the help of a motor. If the printer has more than one extruder it can print more than one colour or material at the same time.

Features of a 3D printer:

• Connectivity: In general you can connect the 3D printers with a Type B USB connection. Then there are printers that can be connected with the help of Ethernet or wirelessly WiFi connection that can be operated from a PC or a mobile phone. Some 3D printers come with USB or SD card slot to run independently, without depending on external computers. • LCD and Display: 3D printers come with either a character or a graphical LCD display, touchscreen where you can view the item. Some have coloured LEDs showing information like printing progress. • • Assembled vs. Kit: Any 3D printer has multiple parts and accessories that need to be assembled for the printer to work. Some 3D printers come in a DIY Kit that you can assemble and then calibrate before using. Some other features that you may look for are presence of a camera, scanning and fax facilities, features for automatic material recognition etc.

How to choose your3D printer according to your need?

3D printer for personal use

There are affordable and dependable 3D printers for home users that can handle both ABS and PLA filament. Some have a dimension of 150mm x 110mm x 90mm in which you can print small things. You get 3D printers that come partially assembled and with minor configuration, you are good to go. Some use a light-sensitive liquid resin that hardens when exposed to laser beam.

3D printer for professional use

Industrial-grade 3D printers are fully functional and used for creating prototypes. They have great print capacities at highest resolution and use even the toughest filament materials. Depending on the fabrication requirements you must choose type of technology used in your 3D printer.

What are the most popular 3D printers?
