   SamsungÕs UN55D6500 is a good 3D HDTV that came at a bad time. ItÕs a luxurious piece, but one that has enough features to merit a closer look.
   Just like most HDTVs these days, the D6500 went for the sleek and slim look. Its 54.6Ó viewable display is surrounded by a 0.5Ó bezel frame with a thin acrylic finish. ItÕs one of the thinnest (1.2Ó depth) and lightest (47.4 lbs with stand) in its line and offers standard A/V I/O docks, 4 HDMI inputs, 3 USB 2.0 ports and WiFi connectivity.
   The 3D mode works without errors in depth order that riddled SamsungÕs first 3D HDTV, the 40C7000. Yet, it may be hard to justify the cost of a bundle including battery-operated 3D glasses and a 3D Bluray disc player when thereÕs only a limited number of movies and games that supports this format. In this case, buyers will still have to look at its more mainstream functions and features for its strengths, which, in all fairness to the D6500, is something it doesnÕt lack for.
   Avid sports fans will greatly benefit from its 480Hz clear motion rate as it effectively reduces motion blur, while its local dimming capability provides sufficient contrast during those hard-to-see dark scenes. However, its sound is not as rich as its video quality, and may require an extra boost from a speaker.
   Many users will also find SamsungÕs SmartHub feature very comprehensive. It boasts of over 200 (and growing) internet applications such as Youtube, Netflix, Hulu, NBA.com, Skype and Twitter, most of which are available at reasonable prices. ItÕs also capable of searching other DLNA-compliant devices for playable content.
   Even with all its enticing features, the D6500Õs retail price alone is enough to put most potential buyers off. Even worse, 3D home viewing technology has yet to mature at a time when the market is deciding whether to elevate it as a standard or dismiss it as a passing fad. The choice will definitely be an economic one, but those who wonÕt settle for anything less than 3D quality may look to the D6500 for their viewing luxury.
