Canon PowerShot SX40 HS Black 12.1 MP 24mm Wide Angle Digital Camera (5251B001)Newegg.ca - Once you know, you Newegg!
The Canon SX40 HS is a 12.1 megapixel digital camera with 35x wide angle optical zoom lens. It has a 2.7 vari-angle LCD that can rotate up to 270°. It tilts up and down for easy shooting even above the head level, for self-portraits or for taking group shots that include you. However, the screen is a little inflexible and quite hard to rotate.
The SX40 HS has a 1080p high definition video that comes with a stereo sound. It can shoot at 24 frames per second and almost 30 frames per second at 720p. The slow-motion mode of the videos is also admirable. However, there is no microphone jack for an exterior microphone. The recording is not noise-free, but, it is still tolerable. There are some limitations, though. Focusing is not perfectly quiet. Zooming seems to become difficult at the maximum level of the zoom range. The electronic view finder doesn’t deliver well. And the following are not available: water resistant housing, sunset and star modes. When taking the panoramic photos, there is still a need to do some stitching on the computer which is an extra work. This camera is cute enough to be your walk-around cam being 1.3 pounds in weight and 3.8 x 4.2 x 3.6 inches in size. One drawback is the propriety battery. This will surely pose a problem in case it becomes no longer reusable. It would mean an additional expense if the battery is still available on the market and there’s a need to buy a new camera if the battery is already phased out, which hopefully, won’t happen. So, when you travel, there’s a need to bring with you another propriety battery to ensure continuous photo shooting in case recharging is not possible.
Some users received the camera without the instructions manual and that’s one of the reasons why some fail to maximize the usage of all the camera features that are available in order to have an amazing picture quality. This camera works well for landscape and portrait shots. But for moving objects, it won’t be that fast. Some users find the camera lags when trying to shoot special moments like a smile, a jump, or any movements that are worth capturing and worth keeping. Others find it hard to consider this camera as a good people and action photo shooting device. For beginners, the Canon SX40 HS is a nice starting tool. On the other hand, professionals might look for a more sophisticated one. Although the SX40 HS has some minuses when it comes to features reliability, it is cheaper than the Panasonic and other cameras of almost the same size and class. It is definitely not the quickest zoom or the sharpest image for less lighted photo shooting but the price is irresistible. Buttons are available for many uses, unfortunately, there are two buttons that sit closely with each other and are both subject to simultaneous pressure when you pick up the camera or while you hold it which makes unintentional commands to the camera.
Overall, the Canon SX40 HS is a nice beginner’s camera which is unquestionably more affordable than other cameras on the market these days. It has some minuses and pluses; however, the positive seems to outweigh the negative. With its affordability and image quality when given the right focus, it is definitely worth a try.
