The ASUS VH236H is 23” widescreen LCD monitor that offers high quality photographs and videos. With an integrated HDMI port, it allows you to enjoy videos or television and even Blu-ray DVDs in high definitions. While the Asus VH236H is lacking in the desktop and internet browsing department, it is unbeatable when it comes to gaming. Weighing in at a modest 12 lbs. with a 23” screen, the Asus monitor is a great compromise between size and desktop footprint. 1920 x 1080 resolution and DVI, D-Sub, and HDMI inputs ensure that your PC games and your current-gen consoles will look their best. With a glossy black bezel, juxtaposed with its black matte finish on the back, the 23-inch VH236H has a fairly plain design. The panel measures just 1.25 inches in depth; however, with the ventilation system, the full-panel depth is 2.5 inches. The bezel measures 0.75 inch on its left and right sides and 1.25 inches on its bottom, where a silver Asus logo resides. The screen height isn't adjustable and there isn't a screen rotation or pivot option for portrait mode. The capability to tilt the screen back 25 degrees is the only included ergonomic feature. The circular footstand measures 4.25 inches in diameter. Connection options include DVI, HDMI, and VGA–all three ports are easily accessible to the right of the display’s neck. Built-in speakers sit on the top of the display’s back side. The power button is orange, making it easier to find in the dark. It sits in the bottom-right corner of the bezel and to its left is the five-button OSD array. The array consists of Menu, Audio/Down, Brightness/Up, S/A, and Source. The S/A button toggles through five presets: Standard, Theater, Game, Night View, and Scenery. The blue power LED is fairly bright but not distracting enough to. There are two 2-watt speakers included, and considering that they are built into a monitor, they sound decent. Knowing you have a number of speakers, no matter where your monitor is a nice addition. There is a headphone jack next to the video inputs. There is also a digital-output for when you hook up a console via HDMI and want to send the audio signal to an external audio system. Considering the size of this monitor, the footprint is relatively small. Pressing Menu activates the onscreen display (OSD), which includes additional controls for Contrast and Overdrive. Overdrive can effectively reduce the amount of noticeable ghosting effects. There are also controls for color temperature and the ability to manually set the red, green, and blue values. Navigating the menu is frustrating at times, as some of the controls are inconstant in function. Once you press the Menu button, you are required to press the S/A button to exit the menu. Likewise, pressing S/A brings up the preset menu that requires that you press Menu to exit. More consistent controls would be less confusing and frustrating. Calibrating in the dark is also a challenge as there is no illumination for the buttons. Tooling around on the desktop and browsing the internet is a bit lacking on the Asus VH236H. A fair amount of tweaking is required to prevent things from looking blown out. It isn’t as good as an IPS display, but it’s more than sufficient for most people. Gaming is where the true capability of the Asus VH236H is revealed. This is, probably the absolute best TN panel for gaming. With a grey-to-grey response time of 2ms, there is zero evidence of ghosting. No matter how fast the action is moving on screen or how quickly you whip your viewpoint around, there will be a razor sharp picture. Colors and textures seem to jump right off the screen. Overall, the ASUS VH236H, with a fairly low price amount on qualities that are being offered, is probably the best monitor out there in the market. If you're looking for a sizeable yet affordable monitor with plenty of features and excellent functionality, this model will fits the bill.
